It’s one of the four entrances to the Galleria. If you go straight on from there, you can reach the Piazza della Scala without getting wet, if it’s raining! But why does the galleria have four entrances? Because it’s actually cross-shaped. In fact, if you stroll along the wonderful marble pavement halfway through the galleria, you will see two other entrances on your left and right, and if you raise your eyes, a spectacular iron and glass dome that is nearly 50m in height, like a 16-floor building! The poor architect who built it, Giuseppe Mengoni, fell right from the top on the day of its inauguration and died instantly. It is said, although it may just be a legend, that he did not fall accidentaloly, but threw himself from the top because he was disappointed by the absence of the King (Vittorio Emanuele II) on the inauguration day. In reality, the king who lived in Naples and was very ill, was unable to notify Mengoni and so everyone considered it a lack of appreciation of the magnificent structure on which, just think, over 1,000 workers laboured every day! However, don’t worry about it, and keep on admiring the decorations on the floor. Can you see? There’s also a bull, the symbol of the city of Turin. Another legend has it that if you manage to make three full turns keeping only your right foot (the heel, actually) on the bull’s private parts, you will have good luck! For nearly 100 years, the galleria of Milan was called the lounge of the city because it was here that people met to talk about politics and business, or just to have a natter.
In the Second World War, bombs destroyed much of the galleria, but it was reconstructed exactly the same. Nowadays it is possible to admire Milan from high up, from the roof of the galleria, whose dome inspired the Eiffel Tower in 1889 and the Crystal Palace in London, in 1851.
