The Arco della Pace is a magnificent triumphal arch which frames the view of Parco Sempione and the castle tower 1 km beyond. The Arco della Pace is made of marble and at the top, at a height of 25 metres, you can see 10 bronze horses galloping. Six of them are pulling the female figure of \u201cPeace\u201d who is entering the city triumphantly! It is said that the horses were originally supposed to have been facing the other way but then the Austrians (who ruled the city two hundred years ago), chose to turn them 180\u00b0 as you see them today, as a slap in the face to the French.<\/p>\n

De magnifieke triomfboog sluit het Parco Sempione af en biedt een perfect kader rond de toren van Castello Sforzesco. De arco della pace (boog van de vrede) is helemaal van marmer en aan de top, op 25 meter hoog, kun je 10 bronzen paarden zien in galop, zes van hen trekken de “vrede” (een vrouwelijk figuur) die triomfantelijk de stad binnenrijdt. Er wordt gezegd dat de paarden oorspronkelijk de andere weg uitdraaiden, maar dat toen, de Oostenrijkers (meesters van de stad 200 jaar geleden) er de voorkeur aan gaven hen te 180 graden te roteren.
