Il Naviglio della Martesana, anche noto come Naviglio Piccolo (in lombardo Navili de la Martesana o Naviliett), \u00e8 uno dei navigli milanesi che collega Milano con il fiume Adda dal quale riceve le acque a Concesa poco a valle di Trezzo sull’Adda. Ebbe il nome Martesana, per il contado che avrebbe attraversato, da Francesco Sforza nel 1457, ancor prima che incominciassero nel 1460 i lavori per costruirlo.<\/p>\n
Giunto a Milano riceve il torrente Seveso e poi raggiunge i bastioni di Porta Nuova, dove cambia nome in Cavo Redefossi. Prima dell’interramento della Cerchia dei Navigli il Cavo Redefossi rappresentava solamente un canale scolmatore del Naviglio della Martesana. Infatti, in origine, il Naviglio della Martesana proseguiva il suo percorso cittadino, ora interrato, cambiando nome in Naviglio di San Marco e dando poi origine al laghetto di San Marco, che scaricava le sue acque nella Cerchia dei Navigli.Situato a sud del Canale Villoresi, il Naviglio della Martesana \u00e8 un canale ora non pi\u00f9 navigabile largo dai 9 ai 18 metri, profondo da 0,5 a 1 metro e lungo 38,7 km (di cui alcuni coperti). Il dislivello tra l’incile e il Naviglio di San Marco, superata la Conca dell’Incoronata, era di 19 metri.<\/p>\n
l Naviglio della Martesana, completato definitivamente nel 1496 sotto la guida di Ludovico il Moro, scorre da Trezzo sull\u2019Adda a Milano per una lunghezza totale di 38 km.Il percorso affianca l’antica strada romana (l’attuale SS 11 padana superiore) che passava l’Adda con due rami: a Vaprio e a Cassano.<\/p>\n
L’irrigazione dei terreni situati al di sopra della fascia dei fontanili fu a lungo l’uso prevalente del canale, tanto che in un primo tempo la navigazione era limitata a due giorni alla settimana; contestualmente al miglioramento della struttura agraria grazie all\u2019irrigazione, si produsse in epoca barocca una notevole fioritura di ville signorili, volte a godere della comodit\u00e0 del viaggio sull\u2019acqua e controllare le terre di propriet\u00e0.<\/p>\n
La funzione irrigua della Martesana non ha avuto effetti ordinatori del territorio paragonabili al Naviglio Grande, ma certamente, pi\u00f9 del Naviglio Grande, segna il confine netto tra pianura asciutta, a nord, e pianura irrigua, a sud.<\/p>\n

The Naviglio della Martesana, also known as the Naviglio Piccolo (in Lombard Navili de la Martesana or Naviliett), is one of the Milanese canals that connects Milan with the river Adda from which it receives its waters in Concesa just downstream of Trezzo sull’Adda. It was named Martesana, because of the countryside it was to cross, by Francesco Sforza in 1457, even before the works to build it began in 1460.<\/p>\n
Once in Milan, it received the Seveso stream and then reached the ramparts of Porta Nuova, where it changed its name to Cavo Redefossi. Before the burial of the Cerchia dei Navigli, the Cavo Redefossi was only a canal that drained the Martesana Canal. In fact, originally, the Naviglio della Martesana continued on its route through the city, now underground, changing its name to Naviglio di San Marco and then giving rise to the small lake of San Marco, which discharged its waters into the Cerchia dei Navigli. Located south of the Villoresi Canal, the Naviglio della Martesana is a canal now no longer navigable, 9 to 18 metres wide, 0.5 to 1 metre deep and 38.7 km long (some of which are covered). The difference in height between the incile and the Naviglio di San Marco canal, after passing the Conca dell’Incoronata, was 19 metres.<\/p>\n
The Martesana Canal, finally completed in 1496 under the guidance of Ludovico il Moro, runs from Trezzo sull’Adda to Milan for a total length of 38 km. The route runs alongside the ancient Roman road (today’s SS 11 Padana Superiore) which passed the Adda with two branches: at Vaprio and Cassano.<\/p>\n
The irrigation of the land situated above the band of the fountains was for a long time the prevailing use of the canal, so much so that at first navigation was limited to two days a week; at the same time as the agricultural structure was improved thanks to irrigation, in the Baroque period a remarkable flowering of stately villas was produced, aimed at enjoying the comfort of the journey on the water and controlling the property land.<\/p>\n
The irrigation function of the Martesana did not have any effect on the territory comparable to the Naviglio Grande, but certainly, more than the Naviglio Grande, it marked the clear boundary between the dry plain, to the north, and the irrigated plain, to the south.<\/p>\n
