Si tratta di un\u2019imponente ruota idraulica, popolarmente chiamata \u201cel rudun\u201d. Le apparenze fanno subito pensare ad un grande mulino, proprio come quelli delle pubblicit\u00e0. In realt\u00e0 tecnicamente si tratta di una \u201cnoria\u201d: la sua funzione infatti non \u00e8 mai stata quella di macinare cereali o muovere macchinari, bens\u00ec quella di sollevare l’acqua del Naviglio per poterla convogliare in un sistema di irrigazione.<\/p>\n
Ci troviamo a Groppello, frazione del comune di Cassano d’Adda, e bisogna andare indietro nel tempo quando, nel 1618, il Cardinal Federico Borromeo fece costruire questa grande ruota per convogliare l\u2019acqua necessaria per irrigare gli orti e i giardini della Villa Arcivescovile. Si dice che questa maestosa opera, su richiesta del Cardinale, sia stata progettata da Leonardo Da Vinci in persona. Il che, se possibile, ne incrementa ulteriormente il fascino.<\/p>\n
Raccolta dal Naviglio grazie alle pale del rudun, l\u2019acqua era usata, oltre che per l’irrigazione, anche per le cucine del palazzo, per riempire le vasche dei lavatoi del bucato, nonch\u00e9 per alimentare due guadi per l’abbeveraggio del bestiame, uno ubicato nella piazzetta attigua al Naviglio e l’altro nella piazza del paese.<\/p>\n
Il ponte attiguo alla ruota ha la particolarit\u00e0 di essere neogotico con bugnati in ceppo nella parte a monte e a tutto sesto sul lato a valle, mentre vicino ad esso sono ancora visibili gli antichi lavatoi, fatti costruire dall’Arcivescovo Romilli nella primavera del 1855, quindi precedenti rispetto al rudun.<\/p>\n
Smantellato alla fine dell’800, l\u2019attuale ruotone non \u00e8 pi\u00f9 quello originale, ma \u00e8 stato fedelmente ricostruito nel 1989. Un parziale restauro, effettuato negli anni \u201890, ha ripristinato il sistema di sollevamento dell’acqua, permettendo alla ruota di continuare a funzionare, per scopi prevalentemente didattici e rievocativi, fino al terzo millennio. Un nuovo intervento si \u00e8 reso necessario quindi nel 2009, quando la ruota \u00e8 stata rimossa e ricollocata al suo posto completamente restaurata per la Vigilia di Natale di quell\u2019anno, quando \u00e8 rientrata in funzione.<\/p>\n
Alcuni numeri: 11 metri di diametro, costituito da 8 possenti pale in grado di spostare e convogliare l\u2019acqua ove necessario. It is an imposing water wheel, popularly called “el rudun”. Appearances immediately make one think of a large mill, just like those in advertising. Actually, technically it is a “noria”: in fact, its function has never been to grind cereals or move machinery, but to lift the water of the Naviglio to be able to convey it into an irrigation system.<\/p>\n
We are in Groppello, a hamlet of the municipality of Cassano d’Adda, and we must go back in time when, in 1618, Cardinal Federico Borromeo had this large wheel built to convey the water needed to irrigate the gardens and vegetable gardens of the Archbishop’s Villa. It is said that this majestic work, at the request of the Cardinal, was designed by Leonardo Da Vinci himself. Which, if possible, further increases its charm.<\/p>\n
Collected by the Naviglio thanks to the rudun shovels, the water was used not only for irrigation, but also for the kitchens of the palace, to fill the basins of the laundry rooms, as well as to feed two fords for watering livestock, one located in the small square next to the Naviglio and the other in the town square.<\/p>\n
The bridge next to the wheel has the particularity of being neo-gothic with ashlars in the upstream part and roundabouts on the downstream side, while near it are still visible the ancient wash houses, built by Archbishop Romilli in the spring of 1855, therefore earlier than the rudun.<\/p>\n
Dismantled at the end of the 19th century, the current wheel is no longer the original one, but was faithfully rebuilt in 1989. A partial restoration, carried out in the 90s, restored the water lifting system, allowing the wheel to continue to function, for mainly educational and re-enactment purposes, until the third millennium. A new intervention was therefore necessary in 2009, when the wheel was removed and put back in its fully restored place for Christmas Eve of that year, when it came back into operation.<\/p>\n
Some numbers: 11 metres in diameter, made up of 8 powerful blades capable of moving and conveying water where necessary.
