The stage follows the ancient tracks of monks that used to travel along the various directions in order to reach their convents. The itinerary starts in Nocara and moves across the Calabro-Lucanian watershed up until Oriolo, one of the \u201cBorghi pi\u00f9 belli d\u2019Italia\u201d, founded as a defensive fortress against the incessant Saracens\u2019 raids along the Ionic coastlines. The trail will attract history and archeology enthusiasts that will be able to visit in the proximities of Nocara the archeological sites of Presinace, Murge di Santa Caterina (where excavations have brought to light remains of a fortified bizantine monastery, probably dedicated to Saint Anania) and Armi di Sant\u2019Angelo<\/p>\n\n
The itinerary (moving across the Calabro-Lucanian watershed) allows hikers to take a look around and imagine how the two neighbouring populations (Lucanians and Brutiians) would coexist and, at times, fight for the control of the land. In the highest part of the trail, along the over-mentioned watershed, in the proximities of Colle San Marco, the route is shadowed by trees. The downhill slope that takes to Oriolo, crosses a series of fields, partly dedicated to the cultivation of wheat and partly to animal pastures. Nocara<\/strong>\u00a0is a small village of inland Calabria that plays a key role in many folk tales and legends: the birthplace of Pontius Pilate; the docking place of Epeius, maker of the Trojan Horse, who stopped here after the war and founded the city of Lagaria; and lastly, the nearby Piano della Noce could be the site of the cave of Polyphemus, the Cyclopes. According to certain studies, the ancient city of Lagaria should rest under the modern municipality of Nocara. Lagaria either owes its name to the shepherd Lagaride, whose flock of sheep grazed the hill where the city was built, or to the \u201clagaroi\u201d (\u201cexhausted ones\u201d), the tired Greek heroes exhausted by the long trip back home.<\/p>
\n \u00a0<\/p>
\n Nocara has very ancient origins: it seems urban settlements existed on the hill since prehistoric Italy. The archeological sites of Presinace, Murge di Santa Caterina, Armi di Sant\u2019Angelo (to mention only a few) originated here, and it is only reasonable to presume that they would have had a leading role in the control of the Valle del Torrente Canna up to the Ionian Sea and basins of the Ragone and Sarmento streams, tributaries of the Sinni river. The municipal palace hosts the Museo Epeo (from the mythical homeric hero): it showcases sculptures, paintings and contemporary artworks from many countries, including Argentina; a special section is dedicated to Tommaso Di Taranto, Italian-Argentinian born in Montescaglioso then emigrated to South America, where he became a famous artist.<\/p>
\n The Convent of Santa Maria degli Antropici, dedicated to the veneration of The Virgin and Child (\u201cMadonna con il Bambino\u201d), is a mile away from the city centre of Nocara: built throughout different eras, it got to its present appearances during the second half of the XVII century. A fresco depicting the Nursing Madonna (\u201cMadonna del Latte\u201d) was discovered during recent restoration works. The ex-convent has been converted to overnight accommodation and rest-stop.<\/p><\/p>\n\n Oriolo<\/strong>\u00a0was initially founded as a defensive fortress against the incessant Saracens\u2019 raids along the Ionic coastlines. The ancient village, perched on a big spur of sandstone, is protected by a natural gorge with a small stream running through it, tributary of the Fiumara di Oriolo. Up on the top is the Chiesa Madre di San Giorgio Martire, with the Norman Castle behind it. Local historian Gabriele Barrio, in \u201cAntichit\u00e0 e luoghi della Calabria\u201d, describes the village:\u00a0\u201cThus is the small village of Riolo, on a rock, up high; surrounded by mountains\u2026it produces a famous wine and even cotton\u201d<\/em>. Oriolo was enriched with many churches and convents in the centuries throughout the evolution of the main urban settlement. The convent of the Minori Francescani was built, nursing seven provincial friars, among which Padre Bonaventura, who died in odour of sanctity. The convent has been for a long time the resting place of the relics of San Francesco da Paola, that father Dionigi Colomba brought back from France as a gift from Queen Catherine de\u2019 Medici. The Pignone del Carretto family played another important role in the history of Oriolo: they were great, well-learned Lords, responsible for the foundation of new villages in the nearby areas and the preservation of Oriolo. Nel tratto superiore, lungo il suddetto spartiacque, nei pressi di Colle San Marco, il percorso \u00e8 ombreggiato da vari alberi. La discesa di \u201cversante\u201d che porta a Oriolo attraversa una serie di campi, in parte, coltivati a grano, e altri adibiti a pascolo di animali. Una tappa sulle orme dei tanti monaci che si spostavano lungo le varie direttrici per raggiungere i propri conventi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nocara<\/strong> \u00e8 un piccolo paesino della Calabria interna protagonista di diverse tradizioni e leggende: luogo di nascita di Ponzio Pilato; punto di approdo di Epeo, costruttore del cavallo di Troia, che reduce dalla guerra si ferm\u00f2 qui e fond\u00f2 la citt\u00e0 di Lagaria; infine, il sottostante Piano della Noce potrebbe essere il sito in cui si trovava la grotta del ciclope Polifemo. Secondo alcuni studi, nell\u2019attuale comune di Nocara si troverebbe ubicata l\u2019antica Lagaria che, si narra, prese il nome dal pastore Lagaride che pasceva il gregge sul monte sul quale fu edificata la citt\u00e0, oppure dai lagaroi (\u201cesausti\u201d), gli eroi greci stanchi del lungo viaggio. Nocara vanta antiche origini: forse gi\u00e0 in epoca protostorica esisteva un insediamento su questo colle. Da qui hanno origine i siti archeologici di Presinace, Murge di Santa Caterina, Armi di Sant\u2019Angelo (solo per citarne alcuni) che ragionevolmente possono aver svolto un ruolo di controllo sull\u2019intera Valle del Torrente Canna fino al Mar Ionio e sui bacini del Torrente Ragone e Sarmento, affluenti del fiume Sinni. Nel palazzo municipale ha sede il Museo Epeo (dal nome dal mitico eroe omerico): si tratta di una raccolta di sculture, quadri e opere contemporanee provenienti da molti paesi, tra cui l\u2019Argentina; una sezione in particolare \u00e8 dedicata a Tommaso Di Taranto, pittore italo-argentino nativo di Montescaglioso, emigrato in Sud America dove divenne un artista di grande fama. Oriolo<\/strong> nasce come fortezza difensiva dalle continue scorribande saracene lungo le coste ioniche. Il vecchio borgo, arroccato su un grosso sperone di arenaria, \u00e8 difeso da una gola naturale solcata da un fiumiciattolo, affluente della Fiumara di Oriolo. In alto sorge la Chiesa Madre di San Giorgio Martire, sormontata dal Castello normanno. Lo storico Gabriele Barrio, nel suo \u201cAntichit\u00e0 e luoghi della Calabria\u201d<\/em>, cos\u00ec descriveva il paese: \u201cQuindi vi \u00e8 la cittadella di Riolo, su una roccia, in posizione elevata; intorno ad essa sovrastano i monti\u2026 vi si produce un vino rinomato, ci cresce anche il cotone\u201d<\/em>. A partire dalla formazione della sua struttura urbanistica civile, Oriolo arricch\u00ec nei secoli il suo tessuto urbano con chiese e conventi. Fu costruito il Convento dei Minori francescani, dal quale vennero fuori ben sette frati provinciali fra cui Padre Bonaventura, morto in odore di Santit\u00e0. In questo convento rimase a lungo la reliquia di San Francesco di Paola che Padre Dionigi Colomba port\u00f2 dalla Francia come dono della Regina Caterina de Medici. Un ruolo importante, nella storia di Oriolo, \u00e8 stato ricoperto per oltre tre secoli dai Pignone del Carretto: furono grandi e illuminati signori, a loro si deve l\u2019edificazione di nuovi paesi nel circondario e nel tenimento di Oriolo. Il Convento di Santa Maria degli Antropici, dedicato alla venerazione della Madonna con il Bambino, si trova a un miglio dal centro abitato di Nocara: costruito in epoche diverse, prende la forma attuale a partire dalla seconda met\u00e0 del XVII secolo. Durante i recenti lavori di restauro \u00e8 venuto alla luce un affresco che raffigura la Madonna del latte.
