La macchia mediterranea inonda il percorso sulla mulattiera che conduceva i contadini di Perticaro e Verzino al fiume Vitravo, nel crotonese, lungo la quale sorgevano numerosi mulini ad acqua. Una tappa che dalla frazione di Umbriatico accompagna all\u2019antica Vertinae \u2013 edificata dagli Enotri o dall\u2019eroe greco Filottete dopo la mitica caduta di Troia \u2013 dove in un tempo remoto gli uomini vivevano nelle pantalitiche, ripiani di grotte collegate da piccoli sentieri che ancora oggi si possono osservare sul fianco occidentale della collina Sperone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Percorso<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Il percorso, caratterizzato da querce e arbusti tipici della macchia mediterranea, \u00e8 su una mulattiera utilizzata dai contadini di Perticaro e di Verzino per recarsi al fiume Vitravo. Qui erano situati i mulini mossi dalla forza dell\u2019acqua per macinare il grano e ricavarne farina<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cenni storici<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Perticaro<\/strong> \u00e8 una frazione di Umbriatico<\/strong>, nel crotonese. Quest\u2019ultimo vanta origini antichissime, risalenti alla popolazione degli Enotri. Il suo nome \u00e8 stato mutato pi\u00f9 volte evolvendosi da Bristacia (in epoca magno-greca), a Euria (in et\u00e0 bizantina), fino a diventare Ebriaticum per i Normanni. Situato sui monti pre-silani e circondato da strapiombi spaventosi, Umbriatico sorge su una rupe che costituisce per sua natura una fortezza inespugnabile, motivo per cui nei periodi turbolenti della Storia il paese \u00e8 sempre stata privo di costruzioni fortificate. Da visitare la piccola Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie, risalente al Medioevo e decorata con tracce di affreschi dell\u2019epoca, e la Cattedrale di San Donato, edificata nell\u2019XI secolo sopra una cripta che in origine era una basilica bizantina del X secolo e le cui colonne sono state probabilmente recuperate dal tempio di Apollo Aleo a Krimisa (nei pressi dell\u2019attuale Cir\u00f2 Marina). Uscendo dall\u2019abitato, oltrepassate le magnifiche strette di Umbriatico scavate dal Torrente Lipuda, si giunge in localit\u00e0 Cozzo Nero dove sono i ruderi di una cinta muraria, mentre in localit\u00e0 Sant\u2019Elia si trovano i resti di tombe preistoriche. A Umbriatico viene ancora praticata l\u2019antica transumanza verso i monti della Sila, oggi divenuta Patrimonio dell\u2019Umanit\u00e0 UNESCO: in questi territori il camminatore s\u2019imbatter\u00e0 frequentemente in vacche allo stato brado tipiche del luogo, la vacca podolica.
Aree d\u2019interesse naturalistico sono il piccolo bacino artificiale di Perticaro, le querce monumentali e il Monte Pescaldo, area boschiva SIC (Sito Interesse Comunitario) caratterizzata da una fitta e pregiata vegetazione tipica dell\u2019area.<\/p>\n\n\n\nVerzino <\/strong>\u00e8 un centro della Presila crotonese: si vuole sia l\u2019antica Vertinae, edificata dagli Enotri o dall\u2019eroe mitologico greco Filottete dopo la caduta di Troia. Se ne trova menzione negli scritti dello storico greco Strabone. Verso il 500 a.C. Verzino pass\u00f2 dalla dominazione dei Sibariti a quella dei Crotoniati i quali, giunti nel paesello, \u201csfruttarono le miniere di ferro, di zolfo e d\u2019argento nonch\u00e9 cave d\u2019alabastro e una sorgente d\u2019acqua sulfurea ivi esistenti. Il territorio andava ancora rinomato per la terra chiamata Ripoli con cui venivano pulite le gioie, e per le erbe medicinali. Abbondante era pure la selvaggina nelle sue montagne\u201d. All\u2019epoca i Verzinesi vivevano nelle piccole pantalitiche, ripiani di grotte collegate da piccoli sentieri, che tuttora si possono osservare sul fianco occidentale della collina detta Sperone dove \u00e8 racchiuso il centro storico.<\/p>\n\n\n\nAltre Informazioni<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The mule track that used to lead farmers from Perticaro and Verzino to the Vitravo river in the area of Crotone (along which many water mills used to stand), is immersed in the maquis shrubland. The stage takes hikers from the district of Umbriatico to the ancient village of Vertinae (founded either by the Oenotrians or the Greek hero Philoctetes after the mythical downfall of Troy). In remote times, people here used to live in penalitiche, a network of caves connected via small pathways that are still visible to this day on the Western side of the Sperone hill.<\/p>\n\n
Route<\/h2>\n\n
The trail runs along a mule track used by farmers of Perticaro and Verzino to reach the Vitravo river. It is characterised by oak trees and small bushes typical of the marquis shrubland. Many mills powered by the strong waters used to stand along the river sides to grind the grains and produce flour.<\/p>\n\n
Brief historical overview<\/h2>\n\n

Perticaro<\/strong>\u00a0is a district of\u00a0Umbriatico<\/strong>, in the area of Crotone. The latter has extremely ancient origins, dating back to the time of the Oenotrians. Its name has evolved many times throughout the centuries from Bristacia (Magna Graecia era), to Euria (Byzantine era), to Ebriaticum as it was called by the Normans. Located in the pre-Sila mountains, Umbriatico sits on a cliff surrounded by terrifying precipices, making it a natural impregnable stronghold (which explains why the village never invested in the construction of fortification structures). It is recommended to pay a visit to the small Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie, dating back to Medieval times and decorated with traces of coeval frescos, and the Cathedral of San Donato, built in the XI century on top of a crypt (originally a Byzantine basilica from the X century, whose columns were probably originally part of the temple of Apollon Aleo in Krimisa \u2013 now Cir\u00f2 Marina).
\nExiting the city centre, passed the magnificent narrow channels of Umbriatico (dug from the Lipuda stream) the trail reaches the area of Cozzo Nero, where are ruins of an ancient city wall, while in the area of Sant\u2019Elia remains of prehistoric tombs. In Umbriatico is still in use the ancient practice of transhumance, now UNESCO intangible heritage, to the Sila Mountains: walking along these territories, hikers will often meet typical Podoliche cows in the wild.
\nOf particular interest from a natural point of view: the small artificial basin of Petricaro, the monumental oaks, Mount Pescaldo, and the SIC forest (Site of Community Interest), characterised by a dense and fine vegetation, typical of the area.

Verzino<\/strong>\u00a0is a municipality of the Presila crotonese. According to studies, Verzino is the ancient town of Vertinae, built by the Oenotrians or by the Homeric hero Philoctetes, who, after the downfall of Troy, arrived in these territories with his men and founded many villages. Records of these events can be found in the writings of the Greek historian Strabo. Around 500 b.C. Verzino passed from the hands of the people of Sibari to those of the people of Crotone. The latter decided to \u201cexploit the iron, sulphur and silver quarries on top of the alabaster ones and a spring of sulphurous water in the area. The land was still renowned for a kind of earth called Ripoli, used to clean jewellery, and its medicinal herbs. Great abundance of game in its mountains.\u201d At that time, people of Verzino used to live in penalitiche, a network of caves connected via small pathways that are still visible to this day on the Western side of the Sperone hill, where the city centre is located.
