It was built at the end of the XVII century, in the crumbling Schiavonia’s Rocchetta (little fortress), which was created in order to control the access from Faenza. It is made of a baroque monumental arch, which was conceived as an entrance, an open door for exchanges and trade. It is the only gate which was not affected by the urban renovations of the XIX century.

In 1438, the replacement of the old wood fences with brick walls began; it was ended in 1499. Between the XVII and the XVIII century a baroque monumental arch was built in the crumbling Schiavonia’s Rocchetta. This was originally conceived to control the access from Faenza, then it was seen as an entrance, an open door for exchanges and trade.

It is the only gate unaffected by the urban renovations of the XIX century, which aimed at creating a modern city without city walls and without gates (St Peter gate, Cotogni gate and Ravaldino gate). Today, there is little evidence of the ancient 5000 meters and more: two pieces of Schiavonia’s Rocchetta in Porta Schiavonia’s square and the last big pieces of the perimeter fence along the Portonaccio road.
