Capoluogo della Fiandra occidentale, \u00e8 una sorta di museo a cielo aperto rimasto fermo a 5 secoli fa, quando l\u2019insabbiamento dello Zwin, il corso d\u2019acqua che collegava la citt\u00e0 al Mare del Nord, la port\u00f2 ad un rapido declino e ad un periodo di \u201csonnolenza\u201d, mantenendone cos\u00ec intatta gran parte dell\u2019eredit\u00e0 medievale. <\/i><\/p>\n
Ma come la principessa delle favole, \u201cBruges la Morta\u201d, nella seconda met\u00e0 del XIX secolo si risvegli\u00f2, trasformandosi nella \u201cVenezia del Nord\u201d, una delle mete turistiche pi\u00f9 frequentate del Nord Europa. <\/i><\/p>\n
Nel 2000 il centro storico \u00e8 stato riconosciuto Patrimonio dell\u2019Umanit\u00e0. Il nostro punto d\u2019approdo in citt\u00e0 \u00e8 il <\/i>Markt<\/i><\/b>, la piazza del mercato, su cui si affacciano una serie di splendidi edifici tra i quali si staglia il <\/i>Belfort<\/i><\/b>, la cui struttura originaria, risalente al XIII secolo, ospitava un magazzino per il deposito della lana e del lino a cui, nel XV secolo, \u00e8 stata aggiunta la parte superiore ottagonale in pietra bianca, dalla sommit\u00e0 dei suoi 366 gradini si gode una vista mozzafiato sulla citt\u00e0 e i dintorni<\/i><\/p>\n

Capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders, Bruges is a snapshot of 5 centuries ago. Its history is one of rise, fall and rise again; in the 12<\/i>th <\/sup><\/i>century, soon after gaining the city status, river Zwin, which had given the settlement its prosperity by linking it to the North Sea, started to silt up. <\/i><\/p>\n The city fell in a sort of deep slumber which maintained the medieval heritage intact. Then, like in fairy tales, \u201cBruges the dead\u201d, in the 19<\/i>th<\/sup><\/i> century, woke up and transformed into the \u201cVenice of the North\u201d, one of the world\u2019s first tourist destinations. In 2000 the city centre was listed among Unesco World Heritage Sites. <\/i><\/p>\n Our landing place in town is the <\/i>Markt<\/i><\/b> (\u201cmarket square\u201d), with its gorgeous historical buildings, including the <\/i>Belfry<\/i><\/b>, one of the city\u2019s prominent symbols dating back to the 13<\/i>th<\/sup><\/i> century, when Bruges was prospering as an important centre of the Flemish cloth industry.
