Poi vennero i Romani che, proprio a causa dell\u2019inospitalit\u00e0 dei luoghi, dovettero faticare non poco per conquistare la zona. <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Ma \u00e8 ai tempi del commercio con l\u2019Inghilterra, nel XII sec., che i tratti della citt\u00e0 cominciano a definirsi; la necessit\u00e0 di un nuovo porto alla foce dell\u2019Ijzer spinse il Conte Filippo di Fiandra ad optare per alcune migliorie, cos\u00ec le strade vennero ampliate, si costruirono nuovi moli, furono innalzate mura e scavati fossati. Nevertheless, centuries later, Romans had a pretty hard time to conquer the region; Caesar spoke of an untold swamp from which you did not know exactly which part was land and which water, with tremendous tides and a poor population living on mounds to keep their feet dry. <\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>It was only at the times of the trade with Great Britain, under Count Philip of Flanders ((1143 \u2013 1191) that the need of a new port on the Yser estuary transformed the city; streets expanded, new piers were built, walls were erected.
