[13

Listed as UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, the old town of Portevenere stands at the far end of the peninsula extending from the Riviera di Levante, the eastern stretch of the Ligurian coast. Since Roman times, this was a safe harbor on the trade routes to Gaul and Spain. Famous figures such as Lord Byron, Eugenio Montale, Francesco Petrarca and Maurizio Maggiani were captured by the charm of this land and decided not only to write about it, but also to spend part of their lives here. The cliff from which Lord Byron used to enjoy plunging into the sea is still named after him today.
The Church of Saint Peter is a suggestive example of the subsequent integration of multiple buildings dating back to different times: a pagan temple (of which the foundations still stand), a Paleo-Christian church dating prior to 6th century, with its arched recess on the right from the entrance, and a black and white-striped Medieval church, erected by the Republic of Genoa in 1256. The castle is known as one of the most important military buildings ever erected by the Republic of Genoa. Its construction started in the 12th century, but the works were completed only in the 16th century, since its aim was mainly to frighten potential enemies and not actually defending the area. The gothic Church of Saint Lawrence, consecrated by Pope Innocent II, treasures the mythical “trave delle reliquie” (literally, the timber of the relics), a log found at sea in 1204. Once brought back to the beach, it was discovered that the log was full of relics, valuables and a parchment with the face of the Virgin Mary. This event is still celebrated every year on the 17th of August with a torchlight procession through the town.

[9.834357239305973,44.050607895478606]}}
