Built upon the initiative of a group of citizens who wished to preserve the church during the first centuries of the 17th century (1522-1528), Santa Maria di Campagna was erected on an area previously occupied by another holy building \u2013 the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Campagnola \u2013 where the people worshipped an image of Virgin with Child from the 14th century. La cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta e Santa Giustina<\/strong> \u00e8 il principale luogo di culto cattolico di Piacenza, chiesa madre dell’omonima diocesi. Ha la dignit\u00e0 di basilica minore.<\/p>\n La cattedrale di Piacenza, importante esempio di architettura romanica in Italia, \u00e8 stata costruita tra l’anno 1122 e il 1233. Tra il 1122 e il 1160 vennero costruite l’area absidale, con la cripta, il transetto e le navate laterali. La facciata e la cupola, invece, furono terminati successivamente. La costruzione del campanile si protrasse sino al 1333 e, nel 1341, venne coronato da una scultura in rame dorato raffigurante un angelo, detta Angil dal Dom.<\/p>\n Nei secoli successivi, la chiesa venne arricchita con decorazioni, cappelle e altari.
