L’origine dell’Abbazia risale ai secoli VI-VII, quando sorse un insediamento benedettino su quella che era l’Insula Pomposia, un’isola boscosa circondata da due rami del fiume e protetta dal mare. Dopo il Mille cominci\u00f2 la stagione di maggior splendore e divenne\u00a0centro monastico<\/strong>\u00a0fiorente votato ad una vita di preghiera e lavoro, la cui fortuna si leg\u00f2 alla figura dell’abate San Guido.<\/p>\n

Il monastero pomposiano accolse illustri personaggi del tempo, tra i quali \u00e8 da ricordare Guido d’Arezzo, il monaco inventore della\u00a0scrittura musicale<\/strong>\u00a0basata sul sistema delle sette note. The church was founded in the 6th century A.D. and from the middle of the 9th century the first community of\u00a0Benedictine\u00a0<\/strong>monks began to form, reaching its peak after the year 1000, when the Abbot\u2019s spiritual and political jurisdiction extended over all the surrounding villages. A true lighthouse of culture, Pomposa had one of the most extensive\u00a0libraries<\/strong>\u00a0of the time.<\/p>\n

Among the personalities that made it so famous were the saint and abbot Guido degli Strambiati and Guido da Pomposa (known by the name of Guido d\u2019Arezzo), inventor of the\u00a0modern musical notation<\/strong>. In front there is the\u00a0Palazzo della Ragione<\/i>, from which the abbot administered justice in his feuds. Il\u00a0Museo Pomposiano<\/b>\u00a0si trova in quello che era il dormitorio del monastero, sopra il\u00a0Capitolo<\/i>. Al suo interno sono esposti pezzi provenienti dai lavori di restauro e di scavo: iscrizioni, marmi, rari stucchi, pertinenti ai primitivi arredi della chiesa, maioliche e reperti archeologici di vario tipo, oltre ad affreschi staccati.<\/p>\n

The Pomposa Museum<\/b>\u00a0is housed above the Chapterhouse, in what was once the dormitory.<\/p>\n

Inside on display there are\u00a0pieces from excavations and restoration works<\/b>:\u00a0inscriptions<\/i><\/b>,\u00a0marbles<\/b><\/i>, and rare stuccoes from the original decorations of the church, majolica tiles and archaeological finds of various types as well as some detached\u00a0frescoes<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n

La Riserva Naturale del Gran Bosco della Mesola, con una superficie di 1.058 ettari, rappresenta uno degli ultimi e meglio conservati residui di bosco di pianura, memoria delle antiche foreste che si trovavano fino a qualche secolo fa lungo la costa adriatica.<\/div>\n

Originatosi presumibilmente nel Medioevo su cordoni dunosi formati dal Po di Goro e dal Po di Volano, il\u00a0Bosco della Mesola \u00e8 oggi la pi\u00f9 estesa area boscata del ferrarese<\/strong>. Il terreno \u00e8 di origine alluvionale e presenta un andamento irregolare, sintomo della presenza di antiche dune, che a tratti formano dei ristagni d’acqua, con vegetazione palustre.<\/div>\n

The “Gran Bosco della Mesola” covers an area of 1,058 hectares which represent the remains of a woodland complex, once much larger, which originated around the year 1000.<\/div>\n

One part of the wood is a\u00a0reserve<\/i>, an area fully protected and left to its natural evolution, while the rest of the area is a Nature Reserve. The origin of the terrain is alluvial and is irregular, a symptom of ancient dunes which in parts form pools of water with marsh vegetation.<\/div>\n

Time ago, the wood, being surrounded by marshes, was frequented by numerous bird species typical of the wetlands; the drastic reduction in fauna, caused by the drainage works, has been halted by the creation of a wetland area inside the wood, called Elciola, generally closed to the public, where duck species and herons find sanctuary.
