The Forum, a central square of ancient and medieval Pula is located in the western part of the town. It was built during the 1st century BC on the designated area, with the entire city administration. It followed suit of any other Roman forum housing the temple dedicated to the Capitoline triad of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. Apart from the central, there were two side temples on the Pula Forum. The Temple of Augustus is the only one fully preserved, while only the back wall of the other one is visible. Said wall was used during the construction of the Town Hall. The second temple identical to the preserved Augustus and built in the same style is called the Temple of Diana. The temple, originally dedicated to the goddess Roma and Emperor Augustus, is a typical temple structure erected between years 2 BC and 14 AD. A simple square edifice consists of a cella, a closed room and an antechamber facing the square, bordered by four columns from the front and the one from its lateral sides. Columns are made from marble with Corinthian capitals. Above the columns and the cella walls is a three-part architrave with a lavishly decorated central part of the wreath above it. On its front side facing the square, the architrave reads ROMAE ET AVGUSTO CAESARI DIVI FILIO PATRI PATRIAE (to Romans and Augustus, the son of divine Caesar, the father of the homeland), used for dating the temple. Above it is a triangle gable with a round medallion. The Temple of Augustus is a wonderful example of the Roman building during the early ages of the Empire. Its decoration reflects the Late Hellenistic influence. In the course of its history, the temple changed its original function. It was used as the Christian church and a grain storehouse. In the 19th century, it was turned in the museum of stone monuments until the bombarding during the WW2, when it was completely destroyed. It was reconstructed from 1945 until 1947, and its lapidarium function restored.

[373
["http://www.ami-pula.hr/en/home/
[13.8422421,44.8699835

The Triumphal Arch of the Sergi in Pula is a superb architectural achievement of the Late Hellenistic Roman building. It was erected in the memory of the namesake family members.

The Triumphal Arch of the Sergi, best known as the Golden Gate, was erected by the Sergi family, a powerful Roman family which had maintained its power and glory through centuries. It was named Porta Aurea or the Golden Gate due to its lavish decorative arch or the gild on the town gate supporting the town walls as well as the triumphal arch at that time. The gate and the walls were destroyed in the 19th century when the new urbanisation plan was adopted under which the expansion of the town core had been planned. The Triumphal Arch is a superb architectural achievement of the Late Hellenic Roman engineering, with its 8 meter high arch from the late 1st century BC, some time between years 29 and 27. Salvia Postuma Sergi had it erected with her own money, in memory of the three Sergi family members: Lucius Sergi, Lucius Sergi Lepid and Gnaeus Sergi. This data is known from the inscriptions which have been preserved until the present day. The Triumphal Arch was erected after the death of the above three mentioned noblemen as a symbol of remembrance of the deceased family members. As they were most probably buried somewhere else, the Arch does not have a traditional burial character. The Corinthian style with a significant influence of the Hellenic art of Asia Minor is best seen on the decorative motifs. The western side of the Arch has been lavishly decorated, while the major part of its eastern part has remained uncarved. As it was located within the walls, but behind the Golden Gate, it was not visible from the east part of the town during the Antiquity. Therefore, the east side decoration is also weaker. Today it stands in the centre of Portarata Square with a stage next to it for holding numerous cultural events.

[373
Flanatička ul. The Basilica of St. Mary Formosa dates back to the 6th c. It is an exceptionally important Early Christian monument. Unfortunately, only the south chapel, shaped as a Greek cross, has been preserved.

Located in the south of the old town core, St. Mary Formosa is one of the most significant Early Christian monuments of the Byzantine art and architecture in Istria and Croatia. The basilica dates from the 6th c. It was commissioned by Archbishop Maximianus of Ravenna from the vicinity of Rovinj, who also had San Vitale and San Appolinare in Classe erected, both in Ravenna. The magnificent three-nave basilica was divided into three naves by columns, which interior rhythm was repeated on its exterior perimetral walls, the window division and blind arch lesenes. The sanctuary was completed by three polygonal arches and two side chapels next to it. Only the south chapel has been fully preserved until today, while the major part of the northern one was built into the neighbouring residential buildings. The basilica’s northern wall is today visible only as a fence surrounding the neighbouring garden. The chapel is designed as a Greek cross, one of which arms ends in a semi-circular axis, while its central part, the point where the two arms cross, is higher than the others. The sanctuary is covered by the quadro-pitched roof, while the remaining part of the structure has dual-pitched roofs. The exterior is simple, decorated by shallow lesenes, blind arches and semi-circular windows. It got ruined, especially during the 1242 fire at the time of the Venetian conquest of Pula. A large portion of its inventory was shipped to Venice, where it was used in building the St. Mark’s Library or Sale delle quattro porte of the Doge’s Palace. In the late 16th c., the basilica was in ruins.

[372
[13.8436183,44.8680069
Hotel
