Capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders, Bruges is a snapshot of 5 centuries ago. Its history is one of rise, fall and rise again; in the 12th century, soon after gaining the city status, river Zwin, which had given the settlement its prosperity by linking it to the North Sea, started to silt up.

The city fell in a sort of deep slumber which maintained the medieval heritage intact. Then, like in fairy tales, “Bruges the dead”, in the 19th century, woke up and transformed into the “Venice of the North”, one of the world’s first tourist destinations. In 2000 the city centre was listed among Unesco World Heritage Sites.

Our landing place in town is the Markt (“market square”), with its gorgeous historical buildings, including the Belfry, one of the city’s prominent symbols dating back to the 13th century, when Bruges was prospering as an important centre of the Flemish cloth industry. The tower formerly housed a treasury and the municipal archives and served as an observation post for spotting fires and other dangers.

A narrow, steep staircase of 366 steps, accessible to the public, leads to the top of the 83-metre-high building.

[3.228608518838882,51.213418738916516]}}
