The existence of the Church is certainly documented starting from the first half of the one thousand hundred (XII century), in particular since 1134. Subsequently, from 1180, the existence of a regular canonical is evidenced, in which members of Catholic religious orders dedicated themselves ""Community"" life following a common rule. In truth, a church and a monastery dedicated to San Mamiliano are also remembered in a document of the year 757, however some scholars believe that this certificate has not referred to this religious site.
Subsequently, the church and the monastery are in use to the hermitans belonging to the order of Sant'Agostino, while the dedication to San Jacopo appears in 1424.
The nineteenth -century historian and naturalist Emanuele Repetti, within the ""historical geographical physical dictionary of Tuscany"", gives an account of ""Lupeta"" as a location in which the monastery of San Jacopo and the monastery of Sant'Andrea coexist - also known under the name of Sant'Andrea in hazelnut, still existing and privately owned. Regarding San Jacopo Repetti says: “The monastery of S. Jacopo a Lupeta had the title of Priory. It seems that once the hermitani of S. Agostino lived it, who in 1294 from the hermitage of Lupeta went to the convent of S. Niccola in Pisa. In viemaggiomento, validating the news of a large monastic family that is the case with the leftovers of the claustro and runners located next to the aforementioned church remain the leftovers. ""
After passing in private property in 1867, today the church of San Jacopo in Lupeta is state -owned property. The last restoration of the church dates back to 1971, while the ruins of the adjacent monastery today delimit the garden of a villa today.
The building is still existing in Romanesque forms, with a tau -shaped plan and orientation of the apse east. The bell tower is accompanied by the left transept, the height of which is lower than the original consistency due to damage suffered during the Second World War.
Outside, the facade is in Capanna, in the Verrucano and limestone fellow, divided into two orders from a Marcapian frame. The portal, positioned in the central portion of the first order, is surmounted by an architrave and a bezel. The architrave is sculpted with stylized naturalistic elements and has an inscription referring to the dedication to San Mamiliano: ""K de Lupeta Ornavit H (OC) Opus/ Pro Eternal Vita Mamilian Priest/ Pro Nostris Ora Delicis"". The pulp that frames the portal of the right side presents, at its top, a stylized wolf head. The second order of the facade is inserted a mullioned window with two losangles on the sides. The bas-relief present to the left of the mullioned window-with anthropomorphic figures identified with the prophets Daniele and Abacuc and with Giobbe or the king judge of Daniele-dates back to the early medieval period (VIII-X century).
The northern prospect has a portal opening with monolithic architrave. There are also three strumba monofor.
The interior is single -nave, with goat covering. The plaque positioned on the right wall dates back to 1867, in which it is possible to read the most recent passages owned by the church. On the same wall there is a slab carved with Christological iron, dating back to the 10th century. In the right transept, however, you can find traces of fourteenth -century frescoes with the Saints Girolamo and Giovanni Battista in union to two other saints, including probably Mamilian. On the left wall there are five rectangular niches, presumably deposits of lamps, and traces of frescoes from the 14th century.
Per arrivare alla Chiesa è possibile percorrere il Sentiero 150 che attraversa la strada Via Butese all'altezza della località Campomaggiore.
