Il 16 luglio 1406 un esercito fiorentino dopo nove mesi di assedio riusciva ad avere ragione di Vicopisano. Era necessario costruire una fortezza a guardia di questa preziosa conquista, una fortezza che fosse imprendibile. Fu cos\u00ec che il governo fiorentino commission\u00f2 a Filippo di Ser Brunellesco un progetto che fece scalpore gi\u00e0 alla presentazione del modello in legno e creta alla commissione governativa.
\nLa fortificazione del Brunelleschi inglob\u00f2 una antica torre risalente al XII secolo che era stata possesso degli arcivescovi pisani: la Torre di S.Maria divenne il mastio della fortezza brunelleschiana che si presenta di tipologia ancora medievale: mura alte con merlatura poggiata su archetti con piombatoie per gettare pece greca infiammata e olio bollente sugli assalitori.<\/p>\n

Ma quel che sorprende, un vera novit\u00e0, \u00e8 un insieme di ponti levatoi destinati, quando ritirati, ad isolare parti della fortezza dal resto, quasi un sistema a buccia di cipolla che doveva funzionare nel caso il nemico fosse riuscito a penetrarvi.<\/p>\n

Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, the Rocca is one of the most important monuments in the world of Italian fortifications.<\/h4>\n

On July 16th 1406 a Florentine army after nine months of siege managed to subdue Vicopisano. It was necessary to build a fortress to defend this precious achievement, an impregnable fortress. Thus the Florentine government commissioned to Filippo di Ser Brunellesco a project that already caused a sensation at the presentation of the model in wood and clay to the government commission.
\nThe fortification of Brunelleschi incorporated an ancient tower dating from the twelfth century that had been owned by the archbishops of Pisa: the Tower of S. Maria became the main tower of the fortress of Brunelleschi that looks\u00a0 still medieval:\u00a0 high walls with battlements resting on arches with openings to throw inflamed rosin and boiling oil on the attackers.<\/p>\n

But what is surprising, a real innovation, is a set of drawbridges which, when withdrawn, would have isolated parts of the fortress from the rest, almost an \u201conion skin\u201d system that had to function in case the enemy managed to enter.<\/p>\n
