Sorta come avamposto doganale al confine dei territori di Pisa e Lucca, costituiva il fulcro del sistema di fortificazioni che tale confine doveva sorvegliare.<\/h4>\n<p>Oltre alla rocca, esistente gi\u00e0 in epoca medievale, dal piccolo avamposto si svilupp\u00f2 un borgo, ugualmente fortificato, nei secoli XIII e XIV. La Pieve di San Bartolomeo, edificata nell&#8217;ottocento per sostituire una precedente chiesa romanica, rovinata in seguito ad un terremoto, conserva una statua lignea della Madonna di Rupecava, significativa scultura trecentesca di Andrea Pisano proveniente dall&#8217;eremo omonimo.
