Del periodo medievale sono rimaste poche tracce, tra cui i resti di mura e la Chiesa ex eremo di Santa Maria in Castello<\/strong>\u00a0che domina il paese, i resti dell\u2019ex Castello di Avane (oggi meta di arrampicatori per una\u00a0palestra di roccia) e il borgo di\u00a0Filettole, ancora dominato dal castello e dalla Torre Mozza, simbolo di antica rivalit\u00e0 tra Pisa e Lucca.<\/p>\n Nel territorio si possono fare piacevoli passeggiate: da qui parte la\u00a0Strada dell\u2019Olio dei Monti Pisani, che arriva fino a\u00a0Buti\u00a0passando per luoghi poco conosciuti dove la natura e il lavoro dell\u2019uomo hanno conservato il paesaggio racchiuso tra monti e mare.<\/p>\n A proposito di spiagge,\u00a0Marina di Vecchiano<\/strong>\u00a0\u00e8 un piccolo gioiello per coloro che amano il turismo balneare lontano dai rumori e dalla folla: quattro chilometri di spiaggia nel contesto ambientale protetto del\u00a0Parco Regionale di Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli<\/strong>. This stretch has preserved an eco-system of sandy dunes and native plants, an ideal habitat for a number of bird species, to the extent that it attracts\u00a0birdwatchers\u00a0<\/strong>from the length and breadth of Italy.<\/p>\nVecchiano is located on the right shore of the Serchio. In the wake of the Pisan domination it fell to Florence and reclamation works began in a bid to promote the development of agriculture and to control the water.<\/h4>\n
