The Upper Eocene-Oligocene Montepiano Marl and Ranzano Sandstone formations constitute a deep-water sedimentary sequence which crops out extensively in the northern Apennines. In the Val Pessola area, the Ranzano Sandstone fills a submarine valley cut into the underlying and partially time equivalent Montepiano sequence. This valley,\u00a0 is commonly interpreted as a submarine fan-valley.<\/p>\n
