Il Ponte della Maddalena \u00e8 comunemente identificato come “Ponte del Diavolo”. Come molte altre imprese che ai coevi parevano impossibili, la leggenda popolare ne attribuisce la costruzione al diavolo, il quale vien poi truffato in vari modi. La leggenda narra del capo muratore impegnato nella costruzione del Ponte che era molto preoccupato del ritardo accumulato nella stessa opera, date le continue ed impetuose piene del fiume. Una sera preso dalla disperazione cominci\u00f2 a pronunciare sacrilegi tali da evocare Satana. Allora il Diavolo disse al capomastro che avrebbe completato lui stesso l’opera in una sola notte in cambio della prima anima che avesse attraversato il Ponte. Il capo muratore accett\u00f2 e la costruzione fu ultimata. Il capomastro, disperato per l’imminenza del pesante tributo al Diavolo, corse dal Parroco del paese, il quale, ascoltata la confessione, escogit\u00f2 uno stratagemma: fece attraversare il Ponte ad un cane, il Diavolo infuriato per il gesto scaltro lo prese e si butt\u00f2 nelle acque del fiume senza mai pi\u00f9 farsi rivedere. Si racconta inoltre che il cane, un pastore maremmano del tutto bianco, ogni tanto si veda passeggiare sul ponte nelle ultime sere di ottobre che rappresenti il diavolo che ancora cerca l’anima del capocantiere. Si dice anche di poter osservare sul fondo del fiume il corpo pietrificato del povero animale.<\/p>\n
Leggende simili si narrano per altri ponti come il Ponte Gobbo sul fiume Trebbia nella localit\u00e0 di Bobbio o il Puente del Diablo a Martorell in Spagna.<\/p>\n
Ci sono altre versioni che parlano di un maiale che rincorreva una mela in cui il maligno adirato dalla beffa subita, si gett\u00f2 nel Serchio, aprendo cos\u00ec un varco con gli inferi scatenando un pandemonio tale da lasciare segni sul fondo del fiume e nella mente degli abitanti.<\/p>\n
Un altro fatto che porterebbe una giustificazione ulteriore al nome che porta \u00e8 la storia di Lucida Mansi. La nobildonna lucchese era bella, prestante, potente, ricca e giovane con una tremenda paura per la vecchiaia. Ella faceva di tutto per evitare l’avanzare dell’et\u00e0: alchimie, viaggi alla ricerca di saggi, fonti mistiche ed altro per non invecchiare. Una mattina, nella sua residenza di Monsagrati a Pescaglia, scopr\u00ec che sul suo viso era apparsa una lieve ruga. In preda alla disperazione cominci\u00f2 a piangere ed urlare. La sera di quello stesso giorno Lucida (o Lucilla) mentre vagava nervosamente per le vie di Borgo a Mozzano, pass\u00f2 presso il Ponte della Maddalena (allora ancora cos\u00ec conosciuto) dove ebbe un incontro con un bellissimo ragazzo il quale le propose trenta anni di giovinezza in cambio della propria anima. La sciagurata accett\u00f2. Cos\u00ec Lucida venne portata dal giovane sul punto pi\u00f9 alto del Ponte, a quel punto il ragazzo prese le sembianze di Lucifero e stacc\u00f2 l’anima della nobildonna dal suo corpo, gettandola nel Serchio.<\/p>\n

The Ponte della Maddalena is commonly identified as the “Devil’s Bridge”. Like many other enterprises that seemed impossible to the contemporaries, popular legend attributes the construction to the devil, who is then cheated in various ways. The legend tells of the chief mason engaged in the construction of the bridge who was very worried about the delay accumulated in the same work, given the continuous and impetuous floods of the river. One evening in despair he began to pronounce sacrileges such as to evoke Satan. Then the Devil told the master builder that he would complete the work himself in one night in exchange for the first soul to cross the bridge. Similar legends are told for other bridges such as the Gobbo Bridge over the Trebbia river in the town of Bobbio or the Puente del Diablo in Martorell in Spain.<\/p>\n
There are other versions that speak of a pig chasing an apple in which the evil one, angered by the mockery suffered, threw himself into the Serchio, thus opening a passage with the underworld triggering a pandemonium such as to leave marks on the bottom of the river and in the mind of the inhabitants .<\/p>\n
Another fact that would bring a further justification to the name it bears is the story of Lucida Mansi. The noblewoman from Lucca was beautiful, strong, powerful, rich and young with a tremendous fear of old age. She did everything to avoid advancing age: alchemy, journeys in search of essays, mystical sources and more so as not to grow old. One morning, in his residence in Monsagrati in Pescaglia, he discovered that a slight wrinkle had appeared on his face. In desperation he began to cry and scream. On the evening of that same day Lucida (or Lucilla) while nervously wandering the streets of Borgo a Mozzano, passed by the Ponte della Maddalena (then still well known) where she had a meeting with a beautiful boy who offered her thirty years of youth in exchange for your soul.
