In questo vicolo \u00e8 possibile vedere qualche resto della sede lucchese della MAGIONE DEI CAVALIERI DELL’ALTOPASCIO, altrimenti detti del “TAU” dal loro simbolo che rappresenta la lettera greca “tau”. Il tau si pu\u00f2 vedere in questo vicolo nei pressi della porta contrassegnata dal numero civico 2, mentre un altro esempio \u00e8 poco pi\u00f9 avanti sul muro a destra per chi entra venendo da via S. Croce. Per quanto riguarda il significato del simbolo, lo si pensa come immagine stilizzata di un martello, strumento con il quale i Cavalieri svolgevano le loro mansioni. Nelle tradizione germanica il tau rappresenterebbe il martello che fu fuso per il dio Thor, e quindi il tau potrebbe anche significare il “segno degli eletti” (Apocalisse, 7). L’ordine ospedaliero, che risalirebbe al sec. XI, fu tra i primi ordini cattolici a carattere religioso-militare. Tra i suoi compiti vi erano la vigilanza sulle strade per garantirne la sicurezza e la manutenzione dei ponti. Aveva la sua sede principale ad Altopascio, ed oltre alla sede lucchese, aveva altre filiali in tutta Italia e nel resto di Europa. Alla fine di una progressiva decadenza, l’Ordine fu soppresso nel sec. In this alley it is possible to see some remains of the Lucca headquarters of the MAGIONE DEI CAVALIERI DELL’ALTOPASCIO, otherwise known as the “TAU” from their symbol representing the Greek letter “tau”. The tau can be seen in this alley near the door marked with the house number 2, while another example is a little further on the wall on the right for those who enter coming from via S. Croce. As for the meaning of the symbol, it is thought of as a stylized image of a hammer, an instrument with which the Knights performed their duties. In the Germanic tradition the tau would represent the hammer that was cast for the god Thor, and therefore the tau could also mean the “sign of the elect” (Revelation, 7). The hospital order, which dates back to the century. XI, was among the first Catholic orders of a religious-military character. In questo luogo sorse lo Spedale di Altopascio con lo scopo di fornire assistenza ai pellegrini e di provvedere alla manutenzione della via stessa. La prima notizia dello Spedale “edificatus in locus et finibus ubi dicitur Teupascio”<\/em> \u00e8 del 1084, ma la fondazione \u00e8 certamente precedente. Lo spedale fu fondato, secondo la tradizione, da dodici cittadini lucchesi o probiviri (probabilmente “lo coro duodenale” citato nella regola volgare), in corrispondenza di un passaggio obbligato tra il padule di Fucecchio e il lago di Sesto (ora bonificati) in prossimit\u00e0 del bosco delle Cerbaie; la scelta non era casuale, perch\u00e9 le necessit\u00e0 di assistenza e cura erano particolarmente sentite in quei luoghi pericolosi e malsani.
