Il castello della Chiocciola<\/strong> \u00e8 caratterizzato da una robusta torre quadrangolare coronata da merli. Su uno dei lati \u00e8 addossata una torretta cilindrica che d\u00e0 il nome al complesso, poich\u00e9 contiene la scala a chiocciola che permette l\u2019accesso ai piani del torrione principale. The Castello della Chiocciola is characterized by a sturdy quadrangular tower crowned by battlements. On one side there is a cylindrical turret that gives the complex its name, as it contains the spiral staircase that allows access to the floors of the main tower. Unica per la sua particolare e originalissima forma a conchiglia, \u00e8 rinomata in tutto il mondo per la sua bellezza e integrit\u00e0 architettonica, nonch\u00e9 per essere il luogo in cui due volte l’anno si svolge il Palio di Siena. Per un’antica convenzione, la piazza e il Palazzo Pubblico non appartengono ad alcuna contrada.<\/p>\n

Lo spazio che sarebbe diventato la piazza attuale era, alle origini di Siena, un terreno bonificato per consentire il deflusso delle acque piovane, come testata semicircolare della valle di Montone, tra il colle Santa Maria e il crinale che va verso Porta Romana. Il nucleo della citt\u00e0 in formazione si trovava pi\u00f9 in alto, nella zona di Castelvecchio e il futuro “Campo” era uno spazio per i mercati, appena laterale rispetto alle principali strade di comunicazione che passavano per la citt\u00e0 e situato esattamente a un crocevia. Qui si incontrano ancora oggi le direttrici per Roma a sud-est, per il mare a sud-ovest e verso Firenze a nord.<\/p>\n

La storia della piazza si intreccia fortemente con quella della costruzione del palazzo Comunale, o palazzo Pubblico, che vi si affaccia<\/p>\n

Unique for its particular and original shell shape, it is renowned all over the world for its beauty and architectural integrity, as well as for being the place where the Palio di Siena takes place twice a year. For an ancient convention, the square and the Palazzo Pubblico do not belong to any district. The space that would become the present square was, at the origins of Siena, a land reclaimed to allow the outflow of rainwater, as a semicircular head of the Montone valley, between the Santa Maria hill and the ridge that goes towards Porta Romana. The nucleus of the city in formation was located higher up, in the Castelvecchio area and the future “Campo” was a space for markets, just lateral to the main communication roads that passed through the city and located exactly at a crossroads. Here the routes to Rome to the south-east still meet today, to the sea to the southwest and to Florence to the north.
