The Sanctuary Madre delle Grazie della Mentorella is one of the most ancient Marian sanctuaries in Italy and Europe. It rises at an altitude of 1018 meters above sea level, on a protruding cliff of the eastern slope of Mount Guadagnolo (Prenestini Mountains) that descends almost vertically to the underlying Valley of Giovenzano, between Tivoli and Palestrina, southeast of Rome. It belongs to the Roman Catholic Apostolic Church (Diocese of Tivoli) and is guarded by the Congregation of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. According to legend, the Sanctuary was built by the will of Constantine in the 4th century, in the place where the former Roman tribune Saint Eustace, who lived between the 1st and 2nd centuries, was converted. In the VI century it was donated to the Benedictines and became, until the XV century, property of the Abbey of Subiaco; abandoned by the Benedictine monks, it was impoverished until the XVII century when it was rediscovered by the Jesuit Athanasius Kircher who directed its restoration. In 1664 Pope Alexander VII proclaimed an extraordinary anniversary for Mentorella, establishing the annual patronal feast on September 29th, the feast of St. Michael the Archangel. In 1857 Pope Pius IX donated the sanctuary to the still present Congregation of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. In 1870 the Mentorella, with all its goods, was forfeited by the new Italian State, and in 1880 it was auctioned by the Italian State. In 1883 the Resurrectionist Fathers bought back the church and the convent from the Italian Government, for the sum of 8,500 liras. The first rector was Father Luigi Oldoini. In 1947 the Holy Stairs leading to the chapel of Saint Eustace were renovated. In 1961 the works of the road, of about 2 km, that joins the Sanctuary with Guadagnolo were concluded; on October 22, 1967, the road that leads to the sanctuary was asphalted, and inaugurated in the presence of the Cardinal Wladyslaw Rubin. On October 29, 1978, Pope John Paul II went, for the first time, to Mentorella, on the occasion of his first pastoral trip as Pontiff; subsequently, he visited it, incognito, many other times, still in the memory of the people of the place. From the spoils, after the decantation, the waters channeled in a tunnel downstream, pass the Folignano ditch over a Cannucceta Bridge with a single round arch, 7.5 meters high. The Bridge of Roman origin has been restructured several times until the last restoration dating back to the past century.<\/p>\n"}},"web":"https:\/\/sit.wp.webmapp.it\/poi\/santuario-mentorella\/","addr:street":"","addr:housenumber":"","addr:postcode":"","addr:city":"","contact:phone":"","contact:email":"","opening_hours":"","capacity":""},"geometry":{"type":"Point","coordinates":[12.936026,41.921407]}}
