[16

We talked about how this path was inextricably linked with the element of water that we have already had the opportunity to meet, now arrived at this point, leaving aside the path that goes in the direction of Mentorella, and proceeding for a few hundred meters, we arrive at an impluvium characterized by a beautiful waterfall. It is remarkable that in this area the torrents are still young. This “cycle of youth” is characterized by slopes that assume high values. As a consequence, watercourses are frequently interrupted by waterfalls and by a series of torrential potholes. The Prenestina region can be divided into two hydrographic systems: a central core with superficial torrential runoff and a deep karst circulation, while the other core is that of a narrow peripheral belt with perennial hydrography, more developed in the north-west and in the south-east, at the geographical extremities of the region. This deviation from the main path to the sanctuary of Mentorella, if continued, leads to the Fonte della Nocchia, a spring that fed the ancient Trebula Suffenas, and in the Middle Ages the Mola della Rocca, which stood along a ditch called “Vae e Simone”. From this deviation, it is also possible to reach the Rocchetta or Rocca de Ilice (name coming from ilex, holm oak). This structure was erected after the year one thousand by the sublacensis monks, with the aim of defending their mountain possessions, as well as the “New Town” built on the ruins of Trebula Suffenas. In the perimeter of the “New Town” stood the church of San Giovanni. When Ciciliano passed under the Theodoli, the Rocchetta declined. The Theodoli, originally from Forlì, settled in Rome in the 16th century, when Girolamo Theodoli bought the seigniories of San Vito Romano, Pisoniano and Ciciliano in 1570.

[12.92361221691893,41.94146454253169]}}
