The starting point of the path is called “”la Lestra””, in front of us we can already see Colle Corvia and the forest that we are going to visit. Here there is an area equipped with tables and barbecue, and as soon as we cross it, the path begins. The Lestra is located in a valley called “Valle Pantana”, already the name suggests the important presence of water. The aquifer of the relief feeds numerous small springs that dot the adjacent valley; most of the waters of this relief are tributary of the Serrone torrent (Rio Maggiore). The Prenestini Mountains territory can be divided into four hydrographic basins (Empiglione, Fiumicino, Aniene and Sacco). In the Prenestini Mountains, which represent the outermost chain of the Laziale Subappenino, at the eastern edge of the Roman countryside, 265 springs have been identified, with a density of 12 springs every 10 sq km. The density and flow rate of springs decreases with increasing altitude. Perennial streams are located in the northwest and southeast. An interesting aspect concerns the scarcity of water in spite of a significant abundance of precipitations; this happens both because the streams have strong slopes with rapid disposal of meteoric influxes, and because of the presence of a permeable limestone core that channels water underground.

We can say that in the Prenestina region two hydrographic systems are identified: a central core with superficial torrential runoff and deep karst circulation and a narrow peripheral belt with perennial hydrography, more developed in the northwest and southeast, at the two extremities of the Prenestina region.
