[13

Ciciliano (619 m), ab 1206, is a characteristic town of the medieval imprint that rises compact on the top of a hill, gathered around its castle. It is located on the site of the oppidum sicilion (or siciletum), of which remain remains of polygonal walls. Sicilianum or Cicilianum is the name inherited by the current village, formed as a result of the devastation of the previous, perpetrated in the ninth century by the Saracens. Trebula Suffenas, the city of the Suffenates, rose on a small hill near the present Ciciliano, to control the “”Passo della Fortuna””. With the barbarian invasions of the fifth century, which was followed by the phenomenon of castellation, the Trebulani barricaded themselves on the nearby hill Caecilianum, possession of the family of Caecilii.

Numerous communities arise on the territory during the High Middle Ages. Above the ruins of the same Trebula we have a Civitas Noe and the Vicus Sancti Valerii, the village of S.Valerio, part of the Massa Jubenzana.

The human frequentation of the area has very ancient origins. Already in the Paleolithic era groups of homo sapiens entered the area following their prey, in particular the deer. A small polished stone axe found in the area is attributed to the Neolithic period. But it was in the Eneolithic age and in the bronze age that the area was undoubtedly more densely inhabited and frequented for its water richness and the ease of movement between the Empolitana and Tiburtina valleys. With the constant influx of shepherds who accompanied their flocks in transhumance, were placed on the bases of trade and civilization. To the “Passo della Fortuna” that the shepherds found shelter and rest for themselves and their cattle.

In the Middle Ages, the ancient tradition of deer hunting favored the rise of myths such as that of St. Eustace, to whom Christ appeared under the appearance of a deer, Christus sub specie cervi.

In the communal period, the contrasts between Tivoli and Subiaco led to the birth of fortresses on the mountains, among which Bubarano, Rocca d’Elci, the Castrum Morellae, which survived until the XV century. After the predominance of the Abbey of Subiaco, the feud of Ciciliano passed, together with Pisoniano and S.Vito, to the powerful Colonna family, who governed it for 190 years, from 1373 to 1563, when it was bought by the Massimo family. In 1541 Pope Paul III had the walls of Ciciliano knocked down because of the non-payment of the taxes by the villagers. In 1572 the Massimo family sold the feud to Monsignor Girolamo Theodoli for 30000 Roman scudi. The Theodoli family, who still lives in the castle, maintained feudal rights until 1816. It was this family that granted the first statute of Ciciliano, dated 23 December 1579. And it is always to the Theodoli family that we owe the present configuration of the manor, dating back to the XII century, an object of modifications for defensive purposes in the XV century with the Colonna, who adopted the model, then very diffused, of the central square male and the four angular bastions. The castle is now equipped with two corner towers and a crenellated crowning, which accompanies the entire width of the terrace and towers.

In the years 1600-1700, following the gradual increase in population, the expansion of Borgo di Sotto was completed. It is in this period that was built the Porta di Sotto, then called Porta Sant’Anna. The last urban expansion took place between 1750 and 1900 and included all the houses located within the current Via Roma. It is in this period that was born the last door called the Court and later Roman.

[12.94130937384443,41.9602421876368]}}
