[16
From here, the view opens up to bushy pastures with rare dry meadows. This type of environment is concentrated in the central northern area of the Prenestini Mountains. The abandonment of many dry arable lands has favored the extension of more or less degraded pastures. These areas are very important for the presence of different vegetal species, in particular for the richness of Orchidaceae. This kind of environment is also very important for some birds of prey that hunt in these areas among meadows and bushes. Often it is possible to see the kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), a bird of prey of the family of the falconids; surely it is also the smallest diurnal bird of prey of the Prenestini Mountains. It lives in every kind of environment and nests on trees, pylons, cavities in human buildings, or rocky walls. You can meet it very easily at the edge of the road or near cultivated fields resting on poles or similar while scanning the ground in search of prey that can be small rodents, lizards, and insects. Another characteristic hunting technique of the kestrel is the holy-spirit flight, the animal stays in the air at a precise point flapping its wings and keeping its tail open like a fan exploiting the winds to keep stable and observe the ground in search of prey. It has a marked sexual dimorphism; the male has the head and the grey tail with this last one ending with a black bar, reddish back, and over a wing with black spikes, black are also the remiges and the tip of the wings. The inferior part is clear with dark dripping. In the female instead, the plumage results more uniform, the superior part is brown with dark spottings both on the head and on the back, the tip of the wings black, the inferior part clear with more marked dripping; the tail is finely barred, with the last barring thicker. It is possible to see the very fast Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus). The silhouette of the pilgrim in flight recalls a crossbow, the body is massive, the wings are narrow and end in a point, the tail is short, characteristics that make it very aerodynamic. The back is dark with colors ranging from slate gray to bluish-black, slightly lighter on the rump; the lower part is white with dark barrature on chest and belly; completely white are the throat and neck, which contrast with the hood and the mustachio which are black. It has an evident sexual dimorphism in the dimensions, the female turns out also a third larger than the male; the young people are distinguished mainly for the presence of striature on the inferior part. In some periods of the year, being a migratory species, it is possible to observe in flight the imposing silhouette of the Short-toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus), the eagle of the snakes. The short-toed eagle is a bird of prey belonging to the Accipitridae family. With a body length of about 70 cm and a wingspan of 170-190 cm, it is larger than the common buzzard and more similar in structure to an eagle. It is clear in the lower part while the area of the head and chest is clearly detached from the rest of the body. It has a relatively large head and bright yellow eyes. It hunts gliding slowly at high altitudes, carefully exploring the ground with its head downwards and with frequent stops in “holy spirit” (beaten flight without moving). Its peculiarity is that it feeds almost exclusively on reptiles, snakes, and to a lesser extent lizards. It hunts them immobilizing them and flapping its wings to disorientate them. In attacking poisonous snakes it is particularly cautious, not being immune to their venom. Once killed, the snake is devoured immediately on the ground or in flight. During the breeding season, however, many preys are returned to the nest to feed the voracious young. Prey is carried in the beak or partially swallowed. Over the course of a breeding season, a pair of great whites capture 700 to 800 individuals.

[12.932621,41.890481]}}
