[16

You can see here in front of you the chain of Simbruini Mountains, in addition to the beauty of the landscape, the proximity with the sub-Apennines and the Apennines is of enormous importance for the Prenestini Mountains. As a matter of fact, these areas, which have been more protected over the years and where the biodiversity has been more preserved, have guaranteed, through a series of biotic bridges, the return of many species to the Prenestini Mountains.

Among these species it is worth mentioning the wolf that, after having reached the historical minimum in Italy in the seventies of the last century, thanks to a series of laws to protect the species, has slowly repopulated our country. A very important species for the biological balance, the wolf has returned to the Prenestini Mountains, after having been eradicated at the end of the 40s of the XX century, towards the 2000s. Today in the Prenestini Mountains there is a stable reproductive nucleus.

The wolf is a predator with exceptional qualities, it knows how to survive in very difficult conditions even in lack of food resources, it has a light physical structure, agile and at the same time powerful, that allows it to cover great distances, but above all it has particularly developed senses. This splendid animal, unlike other large carnivores purely solitary as the bear and the lynx, lives in packs. Within the group there are hierarchies that are continually affirmed, reaffirmed or sometimes risky questioned. At the top of the family unit there are a dominant male and female called “”alpha””. The dominant pair, usually the only one that reproduces, is monogamous. The male and/or female remain bonded for life.

Between January and March (depending on latitude) mating occurs and after about 63 days of gestation, the cubs are born. The average litter is composed of 2-7 cubs that weigh about 500 grams at birth and are deaf and blind.

In addition to wolves, roe deer are present again and deer, which have been sighted and photographed in recent years, have also returned.

Thinking about territories broadly and organically means ensuring life, and protecting entire areas allows life to move, reproduce and thrive.

[12.932532,41.88844]}}
