What we have before us is a “specus”. The veins of Rome that carried water had to be maintained, cleaned, had to be efficient to bring a constant flow of life to the Urbe. This vertical well served to the maintenance of the aqueduct, in fact, the waters, above all those that conveyed from the east, were rich in calcium salts: the slow flow of the water deposited inside the specus of the aqueduct debris and limestone, so to avoid obstructions, a series of vertical and more or less equidistant “wells” were provided that, in their section were approximately 1 m wide by 2 m high, served to maintain the aqueduct efficiently. The kilometric lymphatic system of Rome needed constant attention, the heart of the empire was thus irrigated by water that inflowing continued to decant, to purify itself and Rome drank from distant sources through long tongues of human ingenuity.
