[16

What stands before us is the limestone spur above which the Sanctuary of Mentorella rises. A limestone spur, the northern part of the Caprini Mountains. It stands out on the valley as if it were a fortress, and because of its position, it represents a favorite point for some very important species of birds.

The spur is the nesting place of two particularly interesting species: one of the most intelligent birds, the Imperial Crow (Corvus corax), and the fastest animal on earth, the Peregrine Falcon (Falcus peregrinus).

The Imperial Crow has returned to nest for a few decades on the Prenestini Mountains, is one of the largest passerines living, its thick plumage, black with blue highlights is a feature that sleepy to his unmistakable verse, it is recognized immediately as it plows, with a flight similar to a bird of prey in the sky. This bird has the greatest dimensions of all the others in comparison to the body, this expresses a particular intelligence and capacity of the adaptation really out of the common.

The other species nesting on the spur is the Peregrine Falcon, which takes its name from the plumage on the head that recalls the dark headdress that pilgrims wore in the Middle Ages, is a bird of prey of the family of falconidae present in all continents, except the poles, is equipped with great ability to adapt to any environment, including urban. It can be observed near rocky walls that it uses as a springboard for its record-breaking swoops, exceeding 350km per hour. This ability makes it a formidable hunter in flight and feeds mainly on birds. The silhouette of the peregrine is reminiscent of a crossbow in flight, the body is massive, the wings are narrow and pointed, the tail is short, characteristics that make it very aerodynamic.

Precisely because of the presence of these protected species and much more, the area which is a SAC (Special Area of Conservation under the Habitats Directive of the European Commission) needs special management and due attention regarding sports practiced that have, in some periods of the year, a negative impact on the birds present in the site.

At the base of these majestic limestone spurs, it is possible to find secular trees, they are beeches, among the few remaining on the Prenestini Mountains that represent real patriarchs, often injured by landslides that over time have followed each other modifying the very appearance of the spur.

[12.933938526735282,41.92252819277251]}}
