[13

Poli is an Italian town of 2,329 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Rome Capital in Lazio, located on a hill in the Prenestini Mountains, 435 meters above sea level. The small town is located between Palestrina and Tivoli, southeast of the capital.

The municipality of Poli is located in a wide naturalistic area that goes from Monti Lucretili to Prenestini Mountains passing through Tiburtini Mountains. The whole municipality extends along a valley immersed in the woods. The ancient village of the town is completely surrounded by mountains, among which there are peaks over 1.000 meters high. The village itself rests at the foot of a mountain, Mount Guadagnolo (1218 meters above sea level). The name of Poli derives from Castrum Poli or Castrum Pauli. Its origins date back to 992 when it was a possession of the Benedictine monastery of the Clivo di Scauro of Rome. From 1081 it passed under the dominion of the Abbey of St. Paul outside the walls for a donation wanted by Gregory VII. From here on there were numerous tensions to conquer the power between the monks of the abbey and the family of Oddoni, who obtained the domain in 1157, holding it until 1200, when, after a new dispute, the family of the Counts snatched the feud to the Oddoni governing it for six centuries. In 1808, died the last heir of the Counts and Poli passed to the Sforza Cesarini, after this became, in 1820, a domain of the Torlonia family.

The inhabited area of the village extends on a tuffaceous bank that has an elongated shape, placed between the furrows dug by your streams. The village has 35 very narrow alleys and its structure has remained almost intact over the centuries by maintaining a road structure in “herringbone” (long road in the center that crosses the country in its length).

The Baronial Palace, Palazzo Conti built between the XIII and the XIV century for the will of the leader Torquato Conti, partly seat of the Municipality, dominates the entrance of the village; inside there are interesting frescos of Cavalier d’Arpino and of the Zuccari’s school. The family still owns the main floor of Palazzo Conti. Among the curiosities, it is good to remember that, just on the main floor, in the frescoed wing was born the future Pope Innocent XIII. Scattered in the country there are numerous churches of considerable historical and artistic value, among them it is worth remembering: the archpriesthood of St. Peter the Apostle with its baroque bell tower 39 meters high, built in 1607. The church of Santo Stefano has origins preceding the year 1000, it preserves frescoes by Taddeo Zuccari and other eighteenth-century frescoes by Antonio Rosati. The church of Sant’Antonio Abate is from the 15th century and preserves 17th-century frescoes.

After a series of passages that saw the village, first in the hands of Stefano Stefaneschi, then again to the monastery and again to a certain Giovanni Conte, it became a possession of the Monastery of Rome.
In 1467 a singular event occurred in Poli: some emissaries of Pope Paul II arrived in the feud to arrest and capture a group of people, men and women, accused of heresy. In fact, around 1300 in Poli a group of people called “”sect of fraticelli””, also known as fraticelli della vita povera or Fraticelli della Opinione, became more and more widespread. These people were condemned several times by the Church as heretics and as practicing satanic and orgiastic rites. The sect of the fraticelli had a lot of consensus, including that of the Counts who governed the feud, among the various settlements that they owned are mentioned in historical documents Santa Maria del Monte, Castel Sant’Angelo, as well as San Biagio or Santa Lucia in Casape, places used for meetings in secret. Pope Paul II was able to put an end to the community of Fraticelli in fact, after having urged them to disavow their practices, he had them captured by force and tried them. Among the accused there was also the Baron Stefano Conti who, guilty of having favored the development of the sect in his territories, was imprisoned in Castel Sant’Angelo and had to renounce his feud in favor of his children.
The patron saint is Sant’Eustachio and it is celebrated on September 20th. The episode of the apparition of the deer with the bright cross and the image of Christ between the horns would have happened on the Guadagnolo Mount.

Villa Catena is the easternmost area of Poli, bordering the municipality of Rome and takes this name from the historical villa built by the Counts, Dukes of Poli, who were its masters for about 600 years. Its distance from the center of the town makes it an interesting agricultural area. The Villa Catena, so called for the natural characteristics of the place where it rises, located four kilometers outside the town of Poli was a project of Duke Torquato in line with the fashion widespread at the time among the Roman nobility, to build villas outside the city.

[12.8954129,41.888488]}}
