[16

We entered inside the Natural Monument “Valle delle Cannuccete”. We are embraced by a wood that has remained mostly intact over time, a wood where majestic maples, turkey oaks, and hornbeams stand out and where, thanks to restrictions, they have been protected from being cut. The particular protection of the forest was aimed at ensuring the naturalness of the spring area that supplied water through an ancient Roman aqueduct to the ancient Preneste, today Palestrina.

At this precise point, there was the water collection and decantation tank (piscina limaria) formed by three “calm” tanks that had different heights. The water was captured by a series of drainage tunnels placed upstream to intercept the veins sources and after a series of bottini water was conveyed into the pool limaria.

Here, after the decantation, the waters channeled in a burrow toward the valley, overcome the ditch of Folignano over a bridge to arcade only to all sixth, tall 7,5 meters. The aqueduct then with a series of tunnels overcame the hills that divided it from the ancient Preneste and conveyed the water in the town.

The importance of the forest and the water, together with the spectacular aqueduct is combined with extraordinary biodiversity ranging from amphibians to birds of prey, from mammals to reptiles. This is one of the most evocative places in the entire area.

[12.90974507686844,41.85878729312217]}}
