[16

We are in the presence of great patriarchs, in front of chestnut trees that are a hymn to life. Over the centuries, their fruits have brought life to communities and have marked the rural economy of entire villages.

Today the Prenestina Chestnut Grove is a Natural Monument established thanks to the commitment of the municipalities of Capranica Prenestina and San Vito Romano in which it is located. The protected area is 166 hectares made up of chestnut wood (Castanea sativa Miller).

The naturalistic characteristics of this strip of the Prenestini Mountains are exceptional and range from the age of the chestnut trees to floral and animal biodiversity of remarkable interest. Riches that the forest has preserved and continues to maintain.

The chestnut tree has been cultivated not only for its fruits but also for the quality of its wood; among its merits, there are durability and resistance to humidity, in fact, it is suitable for use as structural wood; it is a very easy wood to work and it is often used for the realization of various artifacts. In these areas (but not only), chestnut wood was also used to make barrels, tubs, cupboards, “spianatore” (boards on which polenta is spread to be eaten), and “cupelle” (water containers used for drinking by farmers engaged in agricultural work).

The maximum diffusion of the chestnut tree in the whole Europe started with the Greeks, it was enlarged by the Romans and continued uninterruptedly during the Middle Ages thanks to the work of the monastic orders. The purpose of this extension was its twofold function, as a starchy resource (chestnuts) and technological (opera wood).

It was at the end of the nineteenth century that the decline of chestnut cultivation began for many reasons: the evolution of the eating habits of European populations, the introduction of alternative materials such as metal and plastic in the construction of artifacts and infrastructural works, civil and agricultural, the crisis of the tannin industry after the thirties, the growing interest in other forest species from wood alternative to chestnut (black locust and cherry), the anthropic pressure on forest environments.

In this chestnut grove in the years two thousand, as happened in many other parts of Italy, arrived also the problem of the gall wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus), an insect phytophagous. This insect does not usually cause the direct death of the plants, but it slows down the vegetative development and reduces fructification. Attacking the vegetative shoots and forming galls, the insect can cause yield reductions of 50-70% in commercial crops, sometimes up to eliminate the production of chestnuts and representing the most damaging chestnut parasite insect, as it contributes to the weakening of the trees indirectly favoring their death.

In this Natural Monument, the plant of ancient formation is affected by localized crop treatments that do not provide in any way the use of chemicals, a fundamental factor to protect the remarkable wealth in terms of biodiversity of flora and fauna.

[12.95795505395299,41.87284375721498]}}
