I feriti furono spediti in valle: i cadaveri nemici furono seppelliti lì accanto, ufficiali e soldati.

[11

You’ve reached your destination.
The Serodine basin military cemetery was built in the wake of the Austro-Hungarian offensive of 13 June 1918. That it was built in the days immediately following on from the battle is confirmed by the moving testimony of Don Vittorio Maini, chaplain of the Mt Clapier battalion:

‘The next day was ultra clear, death seem to reign supreme over the enemy trenches. And death reigned over those little places where enemy corpses and the bodies of the dying were piling up.
The wounded were sent down to the valleys. The enemy corpses were buried nearby, officers and soldiers.
But there were a great many other dead on the rocks and in the valleys which the merciful snows of the next winter would bury. There were also the Clapier dead in the trenches and those who had fallen on the mountain. They were gathered up and taken to the Serodine basin cemetery created right then with these mountains.’
It was only with the chance finding of three period photos that the existence of this little graveyard was discovered, at 2378 metres at the foot of Mt Serodine, between the peak of the same name and the Serodine di Fuori Dairy. It was the highest army graveyard of the Camonica section of the Adamello-Tonale front.
The pictures show at least forty tombs arranged on two levels and in two distinct sectors with the southernmost section, recognisable by its various funeral monuments, being the officers’ section.
A gravestone marks the site where Don Giuseppe Canova, Valcamonica Battalion chaplain killed at Cima Cadì on 13 June 1918, was probably buried. Don Giuseppe was the only army chaplain who died in action across the whole Adamello sector.
Research by the Adamello White War Museum has revealed that the Serodine basin graveyard was removed as early as August 1920 on the grounds that it was difficult to get to and thus maintain. The corpses were moved by army staff from the 20th Disinfection Section of the Detached Brescia Division of the War Cemeteries Committee. Some of the corpses were buried at the Tonale Pass Military Cemetery and some at the Ponte di Legno Cemetery.
Just a short distance away from the cemetery, lucky visitors to the grassy meadow in the last ten days of May can admire the flowering of the magnificent Alpine tulip (Tulipa sylvestris australis), with its wonderful red-striped yellow flowers, here for a very short period of time. It is a very rare plant in this area.
