Mangiai molto e bevvi a colazione. This link was necessary to enable the men in the plains, who had no observation vantage point, to be alerted by those further up.
The structure of the bunkers is the only example of military building entirely in reinforced concrete in the whole of the Camonica section of the front.
Better constructed and maintained than those built in Davenino di Incudine, this defensive work testifies to changes underway in the way such defences were built fostered by natural access to the site and the chance to use different material from that used at higher altitudes.
The quasi circular structure of the casemates feature narrow firing slits at which machine guns were located to cover the whole of the vast area below the defensive line with their fan shaped range of fire.
Half way along the trench the work was finished off with an underground shelter covering almost 50 metres at a depth of around five metres and equipped with air ducts.
The remains of a reinforced passageway under Remulo stream, which cut significantly beneath the course of the stream and coming out on the other side, testify to a truly unique design.
From August 1915 to February 1916, great writer Carlo Emilio Gadda, then 22 and studying engineering at Milan Polytechnic, was nominated second lieutenant of the 5th Alpini Regiment and sent to Edolo. Thirty or so soldiers and four officers, two captains and two lieutenants died there: what a proportion! Technical errors were committed by the artillery and tactical errors by the Morbengo Battalion. […] I think we’ll be trying again today or tomorrow. Today I’m feeling better, morale-wise […].
