Siamo arrivati a 3159 metri, sulla cresta che conduce alla cima del Pizzo di Vallombrina. Il tuo sguardo si apre a 360 gradi, con a nord il Ghiacciaio di Doseg\u00f9 e la cima del Pizzo Tresero, a Nord-Est il Monte Giumella, a Sud, sul versante trentino, l\u2019Alta Val del Monte, mentre a Ovest puoi scorgere la valle di Gavia che discende verso la Valfurva.<\/p>\n
Lungo la cresta che hai percorso hai superato diverse linee di reticolati, postazioni e ruderi di fabbricati italiani, mentre sulla cima del Pizzo di Vallombrina puoi osservare una postazione da fucilieri realizzata in muri a secco e in ottimo stato di conservazione. Nonostante la quota e l\u2019esposizione al vento, questa posizione fu presidiata stabilmente da parte italiana perch\u00e9 da qui era possibile sorvegliare la cresta che conduce alla Punta San Matteo e dominare il versante che dalla Val del Monte scende verso l\u2019abitato di Pejo.<\/p>\n
In questa zona le linee dei due eserciti erano molto vicine tra loro. Racconta il capitano Agno Berlese che durante la notte di Natale del 1917 vi fu uno speciale incontro tra avversari nei pressi della Punta San Matteo. Ascoltiamolo:<\/p>\n
\u201cNella notte di Natale del 1917 sulla vetta del San Matteo, un giovane Kaisersch\u00fctze della ventunesima Compagnia delle guide alpine era di vedetta, quando prima sent\u00ec e poi vide risalire dal ghiacciaio del Doseg\u00fa una colonna di portatori proveniente dal Passo Gavia, la quale, diretta verso le posizioni italiane sul Tresero, si era persa nell\u2019oscurit\u00e0 e nella neve alta, dirigendosi per errore sulla cresta che conduce alla vetta del San Matteo. La vedetta diede prontamente l\u2019allarme. Ben presto giunse il comandante del posto di guardia, che si rese conto di quello che stava accadendo. Un assalto da parte della colonna italiana era da escludersi, in quanto gli uomini procedevano parlottando senza alcuna precauzione e carichi di rifornimenti. A poche decine di metri di distanza il comandante url\u00f2 agli italiani: \u00abStasera \u00e8 la festa di Natale e non spariamo! We\u2019re now at 3159 metres, on a crest which leads to the peak of Pizzo di Vallombrina. The views here are 360 degrees with the Doseg\u00f9 glacier and the Pizzo Tresero peak to the north, Punta San Matteo to the south, upper Val del Monte on the Trentino side while the Gavia valley descending to Valfurva is visible to the west.<\/p>\n
Along the crest you walked along to the peak you passed a number of lines of barbed wire and Italian built positions and ruins while on the the peak of Pizzo di Vallombrina you can see a rifle position built in dry stone wall and in an excellent state of conservation. Despite the altitude and exposure to the wind, this position was stably guarded by the Italians because from here they could control the crest of Punta San Matteo and dominate the slopes which led from Val del Monte to Pejo.
\nIn this area the lines of the two armies were very close together. Captain Agno Bertese tells of a special meeting between enemies near Punta San Matteo on Christmas night 1917:<\/p>\n
On the night of Christmas 1917 on the San Matteo peak, a young Kaisersch\u00fctze from the 21st Alpine Guide Company was on watch when he first heard and then saw a column of porters from Passo Gavia climbing up the Doseg\u00f9 glacier on its way to the Italian Tresero positions having lost its way in the darkness and deep snow and moved up to the crest which leads to the San Matteo peak. The soldier immediately sounded the alarm. Soon the guard post commander arrived and realised what was happening. That it was an Italian attack was out of the question as the column of men were chatting to each other, taking no precautions and were loaded up with supplies. Just a few dozen metres away the commander shouted out to the Italians: \u201cTonight is Christmas night and we won\u2019t shoot! Auf dem Grat, der Sie auf diesen Gipfel f\u00fchrte, sind Sie an mehreren italienischen Stacheldrahtbarrikaden, Stellungen und Geb\u00e4uderuinen vorbeigekommen, w\u00e4hrend auf dem Gipfel des Pizzo di Vallombrina eine Sch\u00fctzenstellung zu sehen ist, die in der Trockenmauerweise errichtet wurde und sehr gut erhaltenen ist. Trotz der H\u00f6he und der Winde, denen diese Stellung ausgesetzt ist, war sie st\u00e4ndig von italienischen Soldaten besetzt, denn von hier konnten sie den Grat zur Punta San Matteo kontrollieren sowie auch die Bergflanke beherrschen, die vom Val del Monte zur Ortschaft Pejo abf\u00e4llt. <\/p>\n
In diesem Gebiet waren beide feindliche Linien sehr nahe beieinander. Der Hauptmann Agno Berlese erz\u00e4hlt von einem besonderen Treffen zwischen den Gegnern in der Weihnachtsnacht 1917 in der N\u00e4he der Punta San Matteo:<\/p>\n
In der Weihnachtsnacht 1917 stand auf dem Gipfel des San Matteo ein junger Kaisersch\u00fctze der 21. Bergf\u00fchrer-Kompanie Wache, als er zun\u00e4chst h\u00f6rte und dann auch sah, wie sich vom Doseg\u00fa-Gletscher ein Trupp von Tr\u00e4gern vom Gavia-Pass herauf n\u00e4herte, die zu den italienischen Stellungen auf dem Tresero wollten; sie hatten sich aber in der Dunkelheit und im hohen Schnee verlaufen und zogen nunmehr irrt\u00fcmlich am Grat entlang, der auf den Gipfel des San Matteo f\u00fchrte. Der Wachtposten schlug umgehend Alarm und schon bald kam der Kommandant, dem sofort Bewusst wurde, was hier vorging. Ein Angriff vonseiten der Italiener konnte ausgeschlossen werden, denn die M\u00e4nner des Trupps redeten ohne jegliche Vorsichtsma\u00dfnahme untereinander und waren beladen mit Vorr\u00e4ten. Aus einer Distanz von wenigen Metern rief der Kommandant den Italienern zu: \u00abHeute ist Weihnachten und wir schie\u00dfen nicht!
