La salita, lungo i sette chilometri di percorso, \u00e8 un affascinante incedere di panorami sempre diversi. Nel primo tratto la bella e larga strada militare risale il versante che degrada verso il Lago delle Scale, tra una rigogliosa vegetazione di pino mugo dove fanno capolino alcuni caratteristici fiori dei calcari. Siamo all\u2019interno delle cosiddette \u201cDolomiti interne\u201d cio\u00e8 di una zona che condivide con le Dolomiti la tipologia delle rocce e l\u2019origine sedimentaria e marina. Si possono ammirare, oltre al comune rododendro che tappezza il terreno con il suo mantello rosso scarlatto, i delicati petali della viola calcarata, la viola biflora, la vedovella celeste, il camedrio alpino e molti altri fiori multicolori. Proseguendo, sui tornanti, si aprono panoramiche balconate sulla Valdidentro e pi\u00f9 in alto sul ghiacciaio che ricopre il versante nord della Cima Piazzi. Spostati poi ai piedi delle strapiombanti pareti occidentali del Monte delle Scale lo sguardo spazia oltre la vallata e su tutta la conca di Bormio. Guglie e pinnacoli risultato della continua erosione e delle frane creano un suggestivo ambiente, attenzione per\u00f2 a guardare attentamente dove si appoggiano i piedi perch\u00e9 questo tratto \u00e8 alquanto ripido e le meraviglie offerte non ti devono distrarre.
\nProseguendo nella salita, soffermati sulle caratteristiche costruttive della strada militare che stai percorrendo. La regolarit\u00e0 della sua pendenza, i cordoni laterali in pietra, i ben conservati muri a secco che la delimitano a monte e che negli attraversamenti pi\u00f9 esposti la sostengono a valle con diversi terrapieni, dicono di una capacit\u00e0 costruttiva di altissimo livello il cui merito va riconosciuto tanto agli ingegneri che furono impiegati come ufficiali nel Genio, quanto ai soldati semplici e agli operai civili che realizzarono a mano e con enormi sforzi questo tipo di opere.
\nAlla costruzione delle strade militari, tangibile segno ancora ben presente, su queste montagne, dell\u2019esperienza storica della guerra, dedichiamo questo breve estratto dal volume pubblicato nel 1931 e intitolato, L\u2019Esercito Italiano nella Grande Guerra (1915-1918). Volume III. Le Operazioni del 1916:
\n“Per il largo sviluppo assunto, fin dai primi giorni della guerra, dalla fortificazione campale e dai lavori stradali, di mina, ci costruzione di ponti, di baraccamenti, di collegamenti telefonici, ecc., una sola compagnia divisionale si dimostr\u00f2 subito insufficiente. The seven kilometres of ascent is a fascinating sequence of ever changing panoramas. In the first section an attractive wide military road climbs up the slope above the Scale lakes with its dense dwarf mountain pine vegetation from which certain characteristic limestone flowers peep out. You are inside what is called the \u2018internal Dolomites\u2019, namely an area which shares the same type of rock and the sedimentary, marine nature as the Dolomite mountain range. In addition to the common rhododendron which carpets the area with its scarlet flowers, the delicate mountain violet, alpine yellow violet, heart-leaved globe daisy, mountain avens and many other multi-coloured flowers can be seen here, too. Continuing, the bends in the road afford panoramic views over Valdidentro and, higher up, over the glaciers which cover the north face of Cima Piazzi. In the direction, then, of the sheer west faces of Monte delle Scale, the views range beyond the valley across the whole of the Bormio basin. Its spires and pinnacles are the result of constant erosion and landslides, creating an evocative environment, but watch your footing here because this section is extremely steep and you should not allow its marvellous views to distract you.
\nContinuing uphill, take a look at the building techniques used for the military road you are walking along. Its regular gradients, kerbs along the edges and well conserved dry stone walls \u2013 above it and holding it up from below in some of the steeper sections with various embankments \u2013 speak volumes of the extremely skilled builders who worked on it. The road was the work of both the army’s engineering officers and the ordinary soldiers and civilians whose exhausting manual work went into this type of work.
\nThere are still many tangible signs of the building of the road on these mountains and this brief extract from a book published in 1931 called The Italian Army in the Great War (1915-1918). Volume III. The 1916 Operations deals with this:

Der Aufstieg \u00fcber die sieben Kilometer lange Strecke bietet best\u00e4ndig neue, faszinierende Ausblicke. Entlang des ersten Abschnitts f\u00fchrt die sch\u00f6ne, breite Milit\u00e4rstra\u00dfe den Hang hinauf, der zum See Lago delle Scale hinabf\u00fchrt, inmitten einer \u00fcppigen Latschenkiefernvegetation, aus der einige charakteristische Kalkbl\u00fcten hervorlugen. Wir befinden uns in den so genannten \u201einneren Dolomiten\u201c, die mit den Dolomiten die Art der Gesteine und ihren sediment\u00e4ren und marinen Ursprung teilen. Neben dem hier gew\u00f6hnlichen Rhododendron, der den Boden mit seinen Bl\u00e4ttern scharlachrot bedeckt, sind hier auch die das Langsporn-Veilchen, das Zweibl\u00fctige Veilchen, die Herzbl\u00e4ttrige Kugelblume, die Wei\u00dfe Silberwurz und viele anderen bunten Blumen heimisch. Entlang der Stra\u00dfe, die kehrend hinauff\u00fchrt, genie\u00dfen Sie einen bezaubernden Blick auf das Tal Valdidentro und weiter oben auf den Gletscher, der den Nordhang der Piazzi-Spitze bedeckt. Dann, am Fu\u00dfe der \u00fcberh\u00e4ngenden Westw\u00e4nde des Bergs Monte delle Scale, reicht der Blick \u00fcber das Tal hinaus und \u00fcber die gesamte Senke von Bormio. Die durch die Erosion und die Erdrutsche entstandenen T\u00fcrme und Zinnen schaffen eine eindrucksvolle Umgebung. Lassen Sie sich aber von diesen Naturwundern nicht ablenken und achten Sie immer darauf, wo Sie mit den F\u00fc\u00dfen treten, denn der Abschnitt ist ziemlich steil.
\nNehmen Sie sich w\u00e4hrend des Anstiegs die Zeit, um kurz anzuhalten und sich die Bauweise der Milit\u00e4rstra\u00dfe anzusehen. Das regelm\u00e4\u00dfige Gef\u00e4lle, die Bordsteine, die gut erhaltenen Trockenmauern, die die Stra\u00dfe bergseits Seite begrenzen und an den ausgesetzten Stellen mit mehreren D\u00e4mmen st\u00fctzen, zeugen alle von einer exzellenten Bautechnik, deren Umsetzung sowohl den Milit\u00e4ringenieuren als auch den Soldaten und Zivilarbeitern zu verdanken ist, die die Stra\u00dfe manuell und unter uns\u00e4glichen M\u00fchen bauten.
\nDem Bau der Milit\u00e4rstra\u00dfen, die auf diesen Bergen noch immer ein greifbares Zeichen des Krieges sind, widmen wir diesen kurzen Auszug aus dem 1931 ver\u00f6ffentlichten Band \u201eDas italienische Heer im Gro\u00dfen Krieg (1915-1918)\u201c. Band III. Die Operationen von 1916:
\n\u201eAufgrund des gro\u00dfen Aufwands mit dem die Arbeiten zur Feldbefestigung, zum Stra\u00dfen-, Minen-, Br\u00fccken- und Kasernenbau sowie zur Errichtung von Telefonverbindungen usw. bereits seit den ersten Kriegstagen verbunden waren, erwies sich eine einzige Divisionskompanie sofort als unzureichend. Das Kriegsministerium nahm den Vorschlag des Oberkommandos entgegen und veranlasste zwischen dem 1. und 15.
