Sei giunto sulla Cima delle Casai\u00f2le.
\nLa cima si colloca sulla lunga dorsale che, partendo dall\u2019impervia Punta d\u2019Albiolo, va a degradare a Cima Le Sorti. Con gli appostamenti difensivi del Passo dei Contrabbandieri, del Monte Tonale Occidentale, di Cima Bleis e di Cima Cad\u00ec, costituiva la linea pi\u00f9 avanzata dello schieramento difensivo italiano sul versante orografico destro del fronte del Tonale.
\nTutta questa lunga cresta si presenta con pendii erbosi sul versante Sud, verso il Passo del Tonale, mentre quello a Nord \u00e8 costituito da pareti che strapiombano verso la Val di Viso.
\nProprio lungo queste pareti venne realizzato un ardito sentiero di arroccamento, pochi metri pi\u00f9 basso del filo di cresta, che consentiva dalla Cima Le Sorti di percorrere, protetti dal tiro delle artiglierie avversarie, tutto il crinale fino alla Punta d’Albiolo.
\nIl sentiero, ancora in molti tratti percorribile, segue le pieghe della montagna e si incunea negli anfratti pi\u00f9 nascosti, all\u2019interno dei quali erano state costruite piccole baracche e grotte ricovero. Quello che stai percorrendo \u00e8 un percorso militare che si sviluppa su un terreno aspro e difficile, dove l\u2019esperienza e la capacit\u00e0 degli addetti ai lavori hanno permesso di realizzare vere opere d’arte. A distanza di oltre cento anni diversi tratti sono ancora perfettamente conservati e testimoniano una capacit\u00e0 costruttiva senza eguali. Numerosi sono i tratti con muri a secco alti anche 4\/5 metri, che sembrano sfidare le leggi di gravit\u00e0, tanto si presentano perfettamente ancorati sui precipizi.
\nOltre alle difficolt\u00e0 del terreno, nella guerra sul fronte alpino il logoramento maggiore delle truppe proveniva dalle severe condizioni ambientali a cui erano sottoposte. A queste quote era fondamentale che i soldati fossero ben attrezzati e vestissero indumenti adatti. Sentiamo cosa raccomandava un socio del Club Alpino Italiano, Giuseppe Albani, in uno scritto pubblicato nel novembre 1915:
\n\u201cSi pu\u00f2 senz\u2019altro affermare che l\u2019equipaggiamento delle sentinelle o delle truppe avanzanti in alta montagna d\u2019inverno – e bene sarebbe anche quello delle truppe in trincea – deve esser senz\u2019altro modellato su quello delle spedizioni polari. La preparazione di questo equipaggiamento nelle sue parti pi\u00f9 importanti sfugge alla potenzialit\u00e0 della piccola industria casalinga famigliare e il materiale e le fogge di tale equipaggiamento devono essere stati oggetto delle nostre previdenti Autorit\u00e0 militari. I materiali occorrenti sono due in modo speciale: la lana e la pelliccia. \nThe peak is on the long ridge which starts at rugged Punta d\u2019Albiolo before sloping down to Cima Le Sorti. With the defensive positions of Contrabbandieri Pass, Mount Tonale Occidentale, Cima Bleis and Cima Cad\u00ec, it was the forwardmost Italian defensive line on the right hand side of the Tonale front.
\nAs a whole this long ridge takes the form of grassy slopes on its south face, in the direction of the Tonale Pass, while to the north it consists of sheer rock faces in the direction of the Viso valley.
\nIt was precisely on these rock faces that a bold fortification footpath was built just a few metres below the ridge, which enabled troops to move along the whole ridge from Cima Le Sorti as far as Punta d’Albiolo sheltered from enemy fire.
\nStill accessible in many sections this footpath follows the mountain’s folds and winds its way into its most hidden nooks and crannies where small huts and cave shelters were built. What you are moving along now is a military path through challenging and rugged terrain where the expertise and skill of those who worked on it made for a full-blown work of art. One hundred years on, several sections of this path are still perfectly preserved, testifying to unparalleled building skill. The dry stone walls on sections of it are up to 4-5 metres high and seem to defy the laws of gravity, so perfectly are they anchored to the precipice.
\nBeyond the difficulties of the terrain, the biggest challenge for the troops was the severe environmental conditions they were exposed to. At these altitudes it was crucial that troops were well equipped with suitable clothing. Listen to what a member of the Italian Alpine Club, Giuseppe Albani, recommended in a November 1915 text:
\n\u2018It can certainly be said that the clothing of the sentries and front line troops \u2013 and preferably also the troops in the trenches \u2013 at high altitudes in winter should emulate that worn in the polar expeditions. The most important elements in this sort of clothing are beyond the capabilities of family craft industry and both its material and styles should be the responsibility of our farsighted military authorities. The material required is especially twofold: wool and fur. \nDer Gipfel befindet sich auf dem langen Grat, der von der undurchdringlichen Albiolo-Spitze bis zum Gipfel Le Sorti hinunterf\u00fchrt. Zusammen mit den Verteidigungsstellungen am Schmugglerpass, am westlichen Berg Tonale, auf der Bleis-Spitze und der Cad\u00ec-Spitze bildete er die vorderste Linie der italienischen Verteidigungsanlage auf der orographisch rechten Seite der Tonale-Front.
\nDer lange Bergr\u00fccken weist auf der S\u00fcdseite, in Richtung Tonalepass, grasbewachsene H\u00e4nge auf, w\u00e4hrend die W\u00e4nde auf der Nordseite in Richtung des Viso-Tals \u00fcberh\u00e4ngen.
\nEntlang der W\u00e4nde, nur wenige Meter unterhalb der Kammlinie wurde ein Verbindungsweg angelegt, der es erm\u00f6glichte, gesch\u00fctzt vor dem feindlichen Artilleriefeuer den gesamten Kamm vom Gipfel Le Sorti bis zur Albiolo-Spitze zu begehen.
\nDer Weg, der an vielen Stellen noch begehbar ist, folgt den Biegungen des Berges und zw\u00e4ngt sich in die verstecktesten Schluchten, in denen kleine H\u00fctten und H\u00f6hlen als Unterschlupf gebaut wurden. Sie gehen entlang einer Milit\u00e4rstra\u00dfe, die auf einem rauen und schwierigen Gel\u00e4nde verl\u00e4uft. Die Milit\u00e4rstra\u00dfe ist ein wahres Kunstwerk, dessen Bau dank der Erfahrung und das K\u00f6nnen der Arbeiter m\u00f6glich war. Nach \u00fcber hundert Jahren sind mehrere Abschnitte noch perfekt erhalten und zeugen von einer exzellenten Bautechnik. Es gibt auch zahlreiche Abschnitte mit bis zu 4\/5 Meter hohen Trockensteinmauern, die den Gesetzen der Schwerkraft zu trotzen scheinen, so nah am Abgrund sie sind.
\nNicht nur das Gel\u00e4nde erschwerte das Leben der Soldaten im Gebirgskrieg. Es waren vor allem die harten Umweltbedingungen, denen die Truppen ausgesetzt waren, die die gr\u00f6\u00dfte Belastung darstellten. In diesen H\u00f6henlagen war es unerl\u00e4sslich, dass die Soldaten gut ausger\u00fcstet und angemessen gekleidet waren. Einem ver\u00f6ffentlichten Brief des Mitglieds des italienischen Alpenvereins Giuseppe Albani aus dem November 1915 entnehmen wir die folgende Empfehlung:
\n\u201eMan kann mit aller Sicherheit behaupten, dass die Ausr\u00fcstung von Wachposten oder Truppen, die im Winter im Hochgebirge vorr\u00fccken – und am besten auch die von Truppen in den Sch\u00fctzengr\u00e4ben -, sich an der von Polarexpeditionen orientieren muss. Die Herstellung dieser Ausr\u00fcstung in ihren wichtigsten Teilen geht weit \u00fcber die Kapazit\u00e4t der kleinen Familienbetriebe hinaus, so dass das Material und die Ausf\u00fchrungen dieser Ausr\u00fcstung m\u00fcssen von unseren vorausschauenden Milit\u00e4rbeh\u00f6rden bestimmt werden. Die ben\u00f6tigten Materialien sind insbesondere zwei: Wolle und Fell.
