It is a way of offering cultural contents without us needing to set up and manage info boards or you to stop and read them. As you move along the itinerary you will receive mobile phone alerts when you reach points of interest. A map of the area will automatically appear, giving you the opportunity to activate an audio description. We recommend you use headphones so that you can remain focused on the route as you walk. As well as audio information the application also makes a series of archive images available. Stop a moment to look at these. Prudence is always advisable in the mountains. Take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the landscape around you.
Remember to wear mountain boots and suitable clothing at all times. At high altitudes the weather changes rapidly and it is important to have warm, wind and rain proof clothing with you at all times. Bringing food and water is recommended and bringing a minimum of first aid supplies with you is good practice. For safety purposes you may also want to consider hiring an Alpine or Middle Mountain guide to accompany you.
You are in the Adamello Park, on the Lombardy-Trentino border, in proximity to the highest mountains in the Adamello massif. It is now a popular tourist destination, a place of meeting and transit, but the Tonale valley has linked up the Camonica valley, land of the Camuni, with Val di Sole, populated by the Anauni, since antiquity.
From 1915 to 1918 the area was the site of bloody fighting between the Italian kingdom and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Most of the fighting took place at high altitude, where permanent snow and glaciers are the norm and this is why it has been called the White War ever since. It is precisely due to the specific conservation facilitated by high altitude environments that so much evidence of the presence of the two armies on these peaks has been conserved. These are important historical records now protected by the law. Any damage whatsoever, including taking with you a small piece of these historical items and finds is thus strictly forbidden.
The information offered here falls under the historical heritage promotion programme sponsored by the Lombard Region in the Stelvio National Park and the Adamello Park, in conjunction with the Temù White War Museum. The aim of the project is to describe the places, events and artefacts linked to World War One, bringing out little known aspects of the war and, above all, remembering that the history of the White War, like that of the Great War as a whole, is a story of unimaginable suffering on both sides.
The purpose of this story is thus to pay tribute to those soldiers who played a part in these tragic events, quietly doing their duty or in the belief that honouring their nation meant giving their lives. We therefore hope you will undertake this very beautiful walk in a spirit which is respectful not only of nature but also, first and foremost, of the memory of the men who were obliged to fight and kill each other here.

From the Curva dei Frati site, just a little below Tonale Pass is an opportunity to climb up to Costa di Casamadre and Cima Castellaccio – not to be confused with the higher Punta di Castellaccio above it, at an altitude of 3029 metres.
The left side of the Tonale Pass valley and, more specifically, Costa di Casamadre, i.e. the long spur which juts out from the base of the remote walls of Punta Castellaccio and continues to the Beltracchi bird snare tower via Cima Castellaccio, was the advance Italian defensive line on Tonale Pass.
The Italian army command had ordered a first defensive line to be built near the pass made up of two redoubts. The Garibaldi redoubt was located above the rise which is now the site of the Frati chapel, and linked up to the Oberdan redoubt just a little below the ridge and beyond it to the Tonolini barracks.
A maze of trenches arranged in a fan shape which made up the backbone of the Italian front line trenches are still visible, though the route to them is made a little challenging by the dense vegetation in the area today.
You will come across three points of interest here: the Rio del Pisso stream crossing, Costa di Casamadre and Cima Castellaccio.
Thanks to the assistance of the archive of the White War Museum, photographs of the area are also on display at this itinerary’s points of interest.

The views over to the far side, with Cima Cadì and Mount Serodine standing out, are enchanting.
Hidden amongst the vegetation there are three cave shelters to the left, just before the ruined aqueduct. From these positions Italian soldiers had an excellent view of the Austrian defences located, since the beginning of the war, on the Monticelli ridge as it moves northwards from Paradiso Pass.
Just a few hours before war was officially declared, at zero hours on 24 May 1915, the band of Italian soldiers based at Paradiso Pass was ordered to abandon this position and move down into the valley. This withdrawal had a significant impact on later military action in this area. In fact, all subsequent Italian attempts to take Paradiso Pass and the Presena basin were inexorably halted by stubborn Austrian resistance and it was only on 24-25 May 1918 that part of the Monticelli ridge was taken.

From August 1915 to February 1916, great writer Carlo Emilio Gadda, then 22 and studying engineering at Milan Polytechnic, was sent to the upper Camonica valley as second lieutenant of the 5th Alpini Regiment. The other one is young and sneers at him, forward and back, on his face, until he takes him by that silly nose and by rocking that big face, he squeezes it for warmth and that one cries and weeps while the choir follows on in leaps and the other rocks and squeezes. Until tragically the joke ends with a sudden noise, the distant thus of the shells. And with this the choral wave lights up, suddenly and totally, as if the wind had risen suddenly in that most powerful and general way it has, passing through pain and regret with breaks for shock and bursts of anxiety and melds into anger and is lost. This is the solitude of the rock faces, the space under the towers, the fog which rises from the deep like smoke in a landless valley, the silence in which mountains are left when men disappear […].

From here, a mule track built just below the ridge took soldiers up close to the various positions while keeping them hidden from the Austrian observers and snipers.
Many still well preserved sections feature a stone kerb on the edge of the track and afford excellent views of the Sozzine valley and the town of Ponte di Legno below.
In addition to roads and mule tracks, teleferics were used for supplying observation and sniper positions scattered along the rocky ridge and natural hollows especially well suited to the purpose with materials, food and ammunition.

One section of teleferic started at an altitude of 1500 metres, at the height of the last bend in the road which climbed up from the Sozzine valley to just above the Beltracchi bird snare tower. A shorter section continued in the direction of the large tunnel position you will come across as you climb. A maze of fortification footpaths completed the logistical layout of the area, linking together positions, sentry posts, warehouses and barracks.
In the basin you are standing in now, an especially attractive covered trench has been reconstructed for educational purposes at the foot of a rocky spur. It was originally built taking advantage of the morphology of the land, in a fortified rocky redoubt which acted as a natural defensive shield in the direction of the Tonale Pass. By means of a great many holes into which wooden beams were inserted, supported by a drystone wall running along the rock, a covered trench was built which was perfectly hidden from potential air raids too.
The trench widens out into a large room and links up to positions and trenches used as a base for firing across to the opposite ridge with its Austrian lines via a tunnel allowing covered sectors and those open to fire to be ideally linked up.
In August 1914, around five hundred Croatian, Bosnian and Hungarian soldiers came to the Sole valley, reinforcing the garrisons already present in the area’s forts. The police and border guard forces were also strengthened, with many elderly reserve soldiers being called up. A first line of resistance was thus built up considerably far behind the border which was linked up to the permanent fortifications. In the Sole valley construction work on this front line focused on the Presena, Strino and Val del Monte side valleys in particular. Access roads were built to the sites chosen for all-out defence where barracks and shelters were built, trenches and artillery posts carved out of the rock, barbed wire put up and trees cut down in order to make the so-called ‘tagliate’.
