Buon cammino!

[11

Welcome to the Adamello Park.

The application “Following in the footsteps of history” you have activated gives you access to historical and environmental information on the place you are visiting. It is a way of offering cultural contents without us needing to set up and manage info boards or you to stop and read them. As you move along the itinerary you will receive mobile phone alerts when you reach points of interest. A map of the area will automatically appear, giving you the opportunity to activate an audio description. We recommend you use headphones so that you can remain focused on the route as you walk. As well as audio information the application also makes a series of archive images available. Stop a moment to look at these. Prudence is always advisable in the mountains. Take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the landscape around you.
Remember to wear mountain boots and suitable clothing at all times. At high altitudes the weather changes rapidly and it is important to have warm, wind and rain proof clothing with you at all times. Bringing food and water is recommended and bringing a minimum of first aid supplies with you is good practice. For safety purposes you may also want to consider hiring an Alpine or Middle Mountain guide to accompany you.

You are in the Adamello Park, on the Lombardy-Trentino border, in proximity to the highest mountains in the Adamello massif. It is now a popular tourist destination, a place of meeting and transit, but the Tonale valley has linked up the Camonica valley, land of the Camuni, with Val di Sole, populated by the Anauni, since antiquity.
From 1915 to 1918 the area was the site of bloody fighting between the Italian kingdom and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Most of the fighting took place at high altitude, where permanent snow and glaciers are the norm and this is why it has been called the White War ever since. It is precisely due to the specific conservation facilitated by high altitude environments that so much evidence of the presence of the two armies on these peaks has been conserved. These are important historical records now protected by the law. Any damage whatsoever, including taking with you a small piece of these historical items and finds is thus strictly forbidden.

The information offered here falls under the historical heritage promotion programme sponsored by the Lombard Region in the Stelvio National Park and the Adamello Park, in conjunction with the Temù White War Museum. The aim of the project is to describe the places, events and artefacts linked to World War One, bringing out little known aspects of the war and, above all, remembering that the history of the White War, like that of the Great War as a whole, is a story of unimaginable suffering on both sides.
The purpose of this story is thus to pay tribute to those soldiers who played a part in these tragic events, quietly doing their duty or in the belief that honouring their nation meant giving their lives. We therefore hope you will undertake this very beautiful walk in a spirit which is respectful not only of nature but also, first and foremost, of the memory of the men who were obliged to fight and kill each other here.

This itinerary climbs up from Rasega in the Saviore valley to Lake Arno, before continuing to the ruins of Campellio barracks. It follows easy footpaths gaining 846 metres in altitude and taking approximately three hours to climb on average. The itinerary follows an army mule track which was built to give troops access to the front lines. At various well-preserved sections you will see road building techniques characteristic of World War One: kerbs at the sides, exceptional substruction and retaining walls and rainwater drainage channels. Over one hundred years ago roads, mule tracks and outpost footpaths were the key elements in army road building. In general these mule tracks used the same techniques as the full-blown military roads but did not have mileage markers and had higher gradients and lower widths. They climbed up the mountainsides with tighter bends and rapid changes of direction. Building guidelines referred to gradients varying from 8% to 18% with peaks of 30% and widths of one to two metres. But such instructions were frequently ignored given the need to take the morphology of the land into account.
You will come across four points of interest on this route: the dam custodians’ building at Italian Alpine Club footpath no 20A junction, the banks of Lake Arno and the Campellio barracks.
Thanks to the assistance of the archive of the White War Museum, photographs of the area are also on display at this itinerary’s points of interest. The nature photos, on the other hand, were drawn from the collections of the international photographic competition Fotografare il Parco.

Happy walking!

[11

You are now at the Arno Lake dam which was built by the Adamello General Electric company at intervals between 1907 and 1927. It was a gravity dam with a maximum height of 27.5 metres. The lake’s waters were channelled via a pressurised penstock to the Isola di Cevo plant, around one thousand metres lower down. When it was first used in October 1910 the water thus channelled powered four Pelton turbines and Isola was one of Italy’s most powerful hydroelectric plants.
You will notice the imposing scale of its facade in large blocks of granite arranged in steps with rusticated regular channels. A specific feature of this plant is a squared off block in the centre of the dam’s wall onto which a Solomon’s knot design has been carved, a symbol which probably dates back to the late Iron Age and the presence of the Celts in these mountains. The design is made up of two irregular ellipsises made up of bundles of lines which intersect twice and are believed to represent the relationship between the human and divine worlds.
During the war the two new hydroelectric plants at Cedegolo and Isola were extremely important as they supplied electricity to Lombard industry.
It was precisely for this reason that the Austro-Hungarian military analysts suggested efforts to sabotage the Lake Arno dam’s water capture infrastructure right away, taking advantage of the fact that the upper Saviore valley area was relatively undefended in the early days of the war.
The loss of electricity would have led to the collapse of manufacturing in multiple Lombard factories, many of which had converted to armament, ammunition and other logistical support material and equipment production
The attempts at sabotage plotted by the Austrians were put into practice on 10 June 1915 but blocked by the Italians, to some extent fortuitously. A crate containing 19 kg of explosive gelignite and another containing a timer activated electric detonator were found by Italian soldiers and are now on display at the Temù White War Museum.
The testimony of Alpino full corporal Giovanni Battista Maloni from Monte, a small Berzo Demo hamlet, in the 51st company of Edolo Battalion in his memoires is valuable:
‘In the first days in which we were camped out at Paghera to the right of Lake Campo we went down to Boazzo Dairy on night patrol and built a little trench near it, on this side of River Chiese, and we sometimes remained there for several days. One morning… we saw an Austrian soldier on his own coming towards us on this side of the river. Our sergeant wanted to shoot him but we dissuaded him, assuring him that the twelve of us would have no problem overpowering him. The Austrian soldier picked up a branch and fixed a white handkerchief to the top of it and came decisively in our direction. He spoke Italian well, better than we did. He was an Austrian sergeant major, a native of Vienna. He already knew all about us, including the name of our company commander. He told us that he had an important secret to confide to our commander urgently. So an Alpino soldier took him up to the company, to Captain Musso.
“I’m here, Captain sir”, said the Austrian sergeant, “to reveal something of the utmost urgency to you, but you must first give me assurances that I will be reported as having been taken prisoner at Boazzo Dairy, not that I gave myself up.
The ruins of the village have been expertly restored recently by the Saviore valley Alpini with the technical and scientific support of the Temù White War Museum. It was just below Campiello Pass, at the foot of the rock faces which descend from Mt Campellio and Mt Zucchello.

This site has sadly gone down in history for the disastrous avalanche which killed 86 soldiers when it struck the village on 3 April 1916. Like the other huge avalanche which struck the Caldea Dairy huts on 8 March 1916, the Campellio disaster could have been avoided. The area’s elders had noted the risky location of the huts but the officers responsible for building them had not taken stock of this valuable information.
The account of Alpino soldier Giovanni Battista Maloni of Cevo provides greater detail on the disaster:
‘Then in spring there was the Campellio barracks avalanche. The barracks had been built by civilians in the summer of 1915 and was finished by spring. The avalanche hit in the early afternoon. My team and I had gone to pick up food supplies at Vertice Q to take them to the barracks. While we were returning we heard a frightening roaring sound that immediately alarmed me. The avalanche had got as far as Lake Arno, taking some of the barracks with it and a hundred or so soldiers. Some of these were only injured but most were dead. They were all recovered. No-one was left in the lake. I myself pulled an injured man out from under the large boulder one of his legs had remained trapped under. […] Most of the dead were infantrymen but there were also a few artillerymen who were at Campellio barracks while they waited to take the small calibre field guns to Campo Pass. […] The avalanche was caused by officers who went up to the rise behind the barracks to ski, thus loosening the snow which swept away the huts and soldiers.

[10.451808,46.049809]}}]}
