Citt\u00e0 dal ricco passato, deve la prima parte del proprio nome ai ponti (arques) sull\u2019omonimo, brevissimo fiume, mentre la seconda rimanda alla battaglia vinta nel 1589 da Enrico IV (re di Francia, protestante) contro le truppe della Lega Cattolica.<\/p>\n
Luogo di passaggio e guado fin dalla Preistoria, Arques fu l\u2019ultima fortezza normanna a capitolare al momento della conquista da parte del Regno di Francia; teatro di questo ed innumerevoli altri scontri nel corso della storia fu il castello, oggi in rovina, ma comunque molto suggestivo, costruito intorno al 1123 su di uno stretto sperone di gesso che domina sia la citt\u00e0 che le valli di Varenne, B\u00e9thune e Eaulne.<\/p>\n
