Situata alla foce del fiume Ouse, la citt\u00e0 acquista importanza con l\u2019apertura, nel 1847, della linea ferroviaria per Lewes e con la costruzione da parte della London Brighton & South Coast Railway di un proprio pontile sul lato est del fiume (sponda su cui la citt\u00e0 in seguito si svilupper\u00e0 maggiormente).<\/p>\n
Situato sulla cima di una collina sovrastante il mare, il Forte di Newhaven serv\u00ec fin dall\u2019et\u00e0 del bronzo per avvistare e difendersi da eventuali invasori. La struttura odierna risale al 1860 ed \u00e8 la pi\u00f9 grande opera difensiva mai costruita nel Sussex; oggi contiene collezioni di oggetti e divise militari.<\/p>\n

Lying at the mouth of the river Ouse, it was a village of little maritime importance until the opening, in 1847, of the railway line to Lewes and the construction by the London Brighton & South Coast Railway of their own wharf and facilities on the east side of the river (where later the city would know the main growth). Newhaven harbor was designated as the principal port for movement of men and material to the European continent during World War I. Located on Castle Hill and dominating the sea, the Fort reminds of a military past as frontier post; since the Bronze Age it served as watchtower to give warning of attacks by possible invaders.<\/p>\n
Current Newhaven Fort structure was built around 1860\u2019s and is the largest work of defence ever constructed in Sussex, now open as a museum holding collections of individual objects, weapons and uniforms.<\/p>\n
