Fra l\u2019Et\u00e0 del Bronzo e l\u2019epoca Romana fu un importante luogo di estrazione e lavorazione del ferro; la presenza delle antiche fornaci \u00e8 ancora testimoniato dalla toponomastica, ma la vera prima espansione della citt\u00e0 si ebbe nel 1770, con la costruzione della strada che collegava Londra a Brighton lungo la quale iniziarono a sorgere punti di ristoro per i ricchi londinesi in viaggio verso la meta delle loro vacanze estive.<\/p>\n

The area may have been settled during the Mesolithic period. Between the Bronze Age and Roman times it was an important centre of ironworking and mineral extraction; the names of some places and streets remind of the many furnaces once existing here.<\/p>\n
But city growth was really boosted for the first time in 1770, when the construction of the turnpike road between London and Brighton (today the A23) was completed; travel between the newly fashion seaside resort and London became safer and quicker and Crawley, located approximately halfway between the two, began to prosper as a coaching halt.
