SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) since 1975, it is the most extensive area of semi-natural Downland (the typical chalk countryside of southern England, from the Germanic word \u201cdun\u201d, hill) left in Greater London.<\/p>\n
Unsuitable for intensive agriculture because of the nutrient-poor, shallow soil and difficult slopes, downland often survived uncultivated and was used by grazing from both livestock and wild animals.
