Tredici delle settantadue case-torri originarie (costruite tutte tra \u2018200 e \u2018300) sopravvivono oggi a testimonianza delle ricchezza delle sue famiglie, che prosperarono grazie al commercio della Vernaccia (primo vino italiano ad aver ottenuto la DOCG) e dello zafferano. Di probabile origine etrusca, la citt\u00e0 fior\u00ec tra XI e XIV secolo per poi conoscere un lungo declino economico dopo la peste del 1348, che la port\u00f2 a sottomettersi a Firenze per averne la protezione. Il nostro ingresso nel centro storico avviene attraverso la Porta S.Giovanni, la pi\u00f9 importante della citt\u00e0 perch\u00e9 costituiva l\u2019accesso da Siena.
