The famous tower-houses were 70 in the Middle Ages; they were planned and developed in height for prestige reasons, but multiplied for practical reasons. The city was a great centre for textile and the only holder of the secret of the yellow dye from saffron. In order to fix the color on the tissue, which must not see the light of the sun, the manufacturers erected the towers where they could lie the tissues which, because of the topography of the city, could not be horizontally lied.

San Gimignano was primarily the centre of a small Etruscan village of III-II sec. b.C. and it starts its history around the X century taking the name of the Saint Bishop of Modena: San Geminiano, who saved the village from the barbarians who wanted to invade it. It went through great development during the Middle Ages thanks to the Francigena Way which passed from here.

There are in fact an extraordinary number of art works that grew adorning churches and convents. In 1199 it became a free city state, it fought against the Bishops of Volterra and its surroundings, it suffered from many inner fights between the two factions Guelphs and Ghibellines. On May 8, 1300, San Gimignano hosted Dante Alighieri in his role of ambassador of the Guelph League in Tuscany.

The city flourished until 1348, when the plague that hit all Europe compelled it to submit to Florence. San Gimignano became a secondary centre until the 19th century, when its status of touristic and artistic resort and the value of its products began to be recognized.

The city is a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO for its unique and particular medieval architecture.

What to visit in San Gimignano:

Square of the Cistern, paved with brick, disposed in cut shape as a fish-bone, which takes its name from the Cistern by XIII century rising in the middle and encircled by palaces and towers.

The Dome or Collegiata Church, consecrated in 1148, is structured on three naves and enriched by beautiful frescoes of Senese school: Old and New Testament (Bartolo di Fredi and “Bottega of the Memmi”); Universal Judgment (Taddeo di Bartolo), works of Florentine school: History of Saint Fina (Ghirlandaio), Saint Sebastiano (Benozzo Gozzoli), Wooden Statues (Jacopo della Quercia) and other sculptures by Giuliano and Benedetto from Maiano.
