La sua origine si perde nella notte dei tempi quando nel 781 d.C. Carlo Magno<\/strong> and\u00f2 a Roma in pellegrinaggio da Papa Adriano I e ricevette in regalo alcune reliquie dei Santi Sebastiano e Antimo. Durante il viaggio di ritorno scoppi\u00f2 una violenta epidemia e, per ringraziare il Signore quando fin\u00ec la pestilenza, fond\u00f2 l’antico monastero su cui poi venne eretta l’Abbazia. Documenti antichi fanno risalire agli Abati Tao e Tanimondo l’edificazione del monastero dedito alla regola benedettina comunemente conosciuta come “ora et labora”. Gli antichi Abati avevano il titolo di Conti e Consiglieri del Sacro Romano Impero riconosciuti da potenti Re come Berengario II. I possedimenti e la giurisdizione dell’Abbazia raggiunsero la Maremma ed il pistoiese, oltre che ovviamente il senese. Nel XII secolo si rese necessario ampliare l’antica chiesa diventata insufficiente alle crescenti necessit\u00e0 dell’abbazia.<\/p>\n

I lavori vennero iniziati dall’Abate Guidone che approfitt\u00f2 di essi per cambiare la forma dell’abbazia secondo le ispirazioni riformatrici francesi. La tradizione vuole che l’Abate Guidone chiese aiuto ai Fratelli francesi dell’abbazia di Cluny. L’Abbazia prese la forma attuale senza transetto e con dietro l’altare un deambulatorio a cappelle radiali che raccorda le due navate. Come spesso accade dal massimo splendore si passa rapidamente alla rovina. Dissanguata dalle spese per l’ampliamento l’abbazia rapidamente decadde a gi\u00e0 nel 1291 Papa Nicol\u00f2 IV la affid\u00f2 ai Guglielmiti (gli adepti di San Guglielmo di Malavalle l’eremita di Castiglione della Pescaia) per poi essere addirittura soppressa nel 1462 dal Papa Pio II (Papa Enea Piccolomini di Pienza). Solo molto recentemente (1992) l’abbazia \u00e8 stata restaurata ed affidata ai Canonici Regolari Premonstratensi monaci di origine francese.<\/p>\n

Its origin dates back to 781 a.C. when Charles the Great went to Rome in pilgrimage to see the Pope\u00a0Adriano I, and received, as a gift, some relics of Saints Sebastian and Antimo. During the way back a\u00a0big epidemic broke out. At the end of this, as a thanks to God for his survival, Charles the Great
\nfounded here the ancient monastery, which later became the Abbey. Old documents let us suppose\u00a0that the building of the monastery is due to Abbots Tao and Tanimondo, followers of the rule of St.\u00a0Benedict, worldwide known as “ora et labora” (pray and work). The Abbots were Counts and\u00a0Counsellors of the Sacred Roman Empire, acknowledged by powerful kings as Berengario II.<\/p>\n

The lands\u00a0and jurisdiction of the Abbey reached the Tuscan Maremma, the regions near Pistoia and, naturally,\u00a0Siena. In XII century it became necessary to make the church bigger and works started under Abbot\u00a0Guidone who also changed the shape of the Abbey following the current French style. According to a\u00a0tradition, he asked for the help of French Abbots from the Abbey of Cluny. Then the Abbey took its\u00a0actual shape, without the transept and with a chapelled deambulatory behind the altar which links the\u00a0two naves.<\/p>\n

As usual, from the highest brightness, things can rapidly fall into ruins. Bleeded dry by the expenses for\u00a0the enlargement, the Abbey quickly decayed and was committed to the Guglielmites in 1291 by the\u00a0Pope Niccol\u00f2 IV (Guglielmites were the followers of Saint Guglielmo di Malavalle, the hermit from\u00a0Castiglione della Pescaia). Then , in 1462, it was suppressed by the Pope Pius II (Papa Enea Piccolomini\u00a0from Pienza). Only recently (in 1992) the Abbey has been restored and committed to\u00a0Premonstratenses Regular Canons, monks with origins in France.<\/p>\n
