[11

Rocca Sforzesca is a castle dating back to the Middle Ages, located in the center of the city of Imola. It is an excellent example of fortified architecture between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Work on the construction of the fortress probably began in 1332. The building was built on the remains of an existing tower, dating back to the eleventh century.

In the fifteenth century the castle was adapted to the new defense systems required by the weapons appeared at that time, under the guidance of Gian Galeazzo Sforza. It was during this period that the fortress took over the current structure, characterized by the four perimeter towers and the keep, lowered by a few meters, in order to better withstand firearms. In addition to the defensive purposes, the walls also served as a prison. In the first half of the fifteenth century Antonio Ordelaffi, lord of Forlì, was imprisoned for twelve years.

In 1499 the fortress was besieged and conquered by Cesare Borgia. In 1502 Borgia himself called Leonardo da Vinci to prepare the drawings and work to strengthen the building after the damage suffered by the Borgian artillery.

Subsequently, Imola passed under the direct pontifical domain. Since there is no longer a need for a defensive structure in Imola, the Rocca lost its original function. From 1524, the year of the arrival in Romagna of Francesco Guicciardini as President of the Province Romandiolæ, the fortress became a papal prison. Even with the advent of the Kingdom of Italy it maintained this function. During the Second World War, and especially after September 8, 1943, the cells of the Sforza fortress were used to imprison political opponents. From here the prisoners were taken and then killed at the Becca well. La Rocca remained in operation until 1958, when the prisons were closed.

Subsequently the complex was restored and in 1973 it was opened to the public as a museum. It houses a collection of ceramics and a collection of weapons consisting of about six hundred pieces, dating from the fourteenth to the twentieth century.

The Rocca is home to a prestigious cultural institution, the International Piano Academy “Incontri col Maestro”.

[11.7068,44.35413333]}}
