Vianen fior\u00ec sotto il governi dei conti di Brederode, che la acquisirono all\u2019inizio del XV secolo. In seguito la citt\u00e0 si autoproclam\u00f2 signoria sovrana, statuto che conserv\u00f2 fino al 1795 e che la rese un sicuro approdo, in quanto \u201ccitt\u00e0 libera\u201d, per malfattori e schiavi in fuga. Vianen thrived under the counts of Brederode, who acquired its lordship early in the 15<\/i>th<\/sup><\/i> century. It formed a self-proclaimed sovereign dominion till 1795. During the Middle Ages, as a \u201cfree city\u201d, Vianen could be haven for felons and escaped serfs. Of the three castles built in town, Castle Batenstein was said to be one of the most beautiful in the Netherlands.
