The leudo dates back to the late Middle Ages and likely evolved to suit the Lateen sail, which was probably brought to Liguria by the Arabs. The boats were used mainly to transport cargo. Because the Republic of Genoa forbade construction of Rivera ports that would compete with the Port of Genoa, there was a scarcity of ports in the Tigullio Gulf.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the leudo was designed to be kept on the beach and towed along the sand for entering and exiting the water. The dimensions of the boat ensured the maximum transport capacity compatible with moving the boat along the beach with winches.
